What does it mean to have a high monocytes and low neutrophils absolute count while I am taking Nexavar, a chemotherapy for advanced thyroid cancer?

What does it mean to have a high monocytes and low neutrophils absolute count while I am taking Nexavar, a chemotherapy for advanced thyroid cancer?

Effect of chemo: Low neutrophils are expected with chemotherapy agents, as the drugs destroy them (in the process of destroying the cancerous cells.) High monocyte count can be due to an infection or inflammation. Also, as the blood counts recover after a dose of chemo, the monocyte count can also be temporarily improved. Good luck with your cancer treatment. ...Read more

I have a low heamoglobin and high monocyte count. What does this mean?

I have a low heamoglobin and high monocyte count. What does this mean?

Big picture: Low hemoglobin always requires a workup. It may be anything from lack of iron in the diet to replace losses from your periods to a minor hereditary item like thal minor to something serious. Ignore the percentage counts of different white cells; if the absolute monocyte count is more than 1000 (assuming all normally-formed), it might point to something but only if there are other symptoms / signs. ...Read more

I have Lupus. What does it mean if my absolute monocytes are Low. Test results say it is 156.

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, a monocyte count of 156 is not a cause for concern. ...Read more

What does it mean if i have high wbc count, high segmented neutrophils, low lymphocytes, high neutrophils, low lymphocytes, high monocytes?

What does it mean if i have high wbc count, high segmented neutrophils, low lymphocytes, high neutrophils, low lymphocytes, high monocytes?

Nothing by itself: I'm a pathologist with a life devoted to lab testing and the mysteries of diagnosis. These results mean nothing apart from a human being and her health history & physical exam. These could be my labs after my first open-water swim of the season while it's still chilly. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside. How do you FEEL? I suggest you relax & ignore this. ...Read more

I got lab results back that show my monocytes were low (3.5), my neutrophils are 7.5 and my white blood cell count was 11. What could this mean?

I got lab results back that show my monocytes were low (3.5), my neutrophils are 7.5 and my white blood cell count was 11. What could this mean?

Likely normal: Without any context as to why the labs were drawn, can only comment that there is some variability in the relative levels of specific white blood cells from lab draw to lab draw. In the context of certain symptoms, the lab could be meaningful/helpful, but I would expect the monocytes to be stable or within the "normal range" the next time this is checked. ...Read more
