What LDL cholesterol level is consider risk factor?

What LDL cholesterol level is consider risk factor?

Particle Question: Ldl is a lipoprotein that can be measured by cholesterol (ldl-c) or particle number (ldl-p). Because cholesterol in LDL is highly variable, ldl-c often disagrees with ldl-p. When cholesterol and particle number disagree cvd risk tracks with ldl-p, not ldl-c. Ldl goals vary depending on risk. If your doctor feels you are high risk ldl-p goal is less than 1000 nmol/l. ...Read more

What's the result?: Was the LDL of 241 before or after starting Rosuvastatin? If before, then you need a follow up blood test to, assess the response. If this is after being on it for a while, then you may need the 20mg or even 40mg dose. ...Read more

A lot depends on your personal and family history and physical examination. Ask your doctor to interpret these results for you and make specific recommendations. ...Read more

Repeat and diet: Hyperlipidemias are classified according to which types of lipids are elevated, that is hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia or both. Additional testing to define the nature of the elevation can help guide treatment, but given the mild nature of your elevation, dietary modification is the initial approach. If unsuccessful, treat with statins (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) and/or fibrates ...Read more

If you have LDL level of 190, white rings in your eyes, possible FH does that mean you already have some artery issues related to high cholesterol?

If you have LDL level of 190, white rings in your eyes, possible FH does that mean you already have some artery issues related to high cholesterol?

Probably: Hi. Maybe/probably, but how odd you don't state your age! Heterozygous FH is a bad actor. HTF old are you? Genes + age (duration) = phenotype (YES, I know genes + environment = phenotype, but I'm making a point!). Many folks with LDL 190 do NOT have heterozygous FH. So don't panic. Take a statin in high dose (maybe with ezetimibe or colesevelam); you at least have ONE LDL receptor gene. ...Read more

What does your LDL (bad cholesterol) number mean?

What does your LDL (bad cholesterol) number mean?

Blood LDL Level: LDL is "low density lipoprotein", a particle that carries cholesterol in the blood. Increased LDL is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke and premature death. Lowering LDL can reduce this risk. LDL levels are estimated by cholesterol (LDL-C). Because the cholesterol carried in LDL particles is highly variable many doctors prefer to use LDL particle number (LDL-P) to manage LDL related risk ...Read more

What is the difference between HDL and LDL cholesterol levels?

What is the difference between HDL and LDL cholesterol levels?

Directional: Total serum cholesterol is made up of several component lipoproteins. Amongst these are fractions: hdl-c is the "good", which you want to be as high as possible and ldl-c is the "bad" which you want to be as low as possible. Lifestyle and, if needed, drug therapy, can help towards those goals. ...Read more

My cholesterol is 253 (hdl=92, ldl=146) what do these numbers mean?

Not good!: For some reason, your results are outside the healthy range in each measure. You might find a good nutritionist who could help you find a diet plan - but a good physician is also needed. You are young and it strikes me as good since you have time to reshape your habits, but bad that it is so out of range already. Don't worry, but do take it seriously - as they say - like a heart attack! ...Read more

Can cholesterol lowering medications be used to elevate HDL levels. The research doesn't seem to support that choice? Total and LDL are w/in range

HDL: Hdl is not often helped with cholesterol drugs. There is some disagreement about this with crestor (rosuvastatin). But, HDL is very much affected by lifestyle. Moderate cardiovascular exercise of at least twenty minutes per day combined with a high protein and low carb diet can significantly elevate the hdl. ...Read more
