What does it meant to have an avulsion fracture of the ankle?

Severe sprain: Most, not all avulsion fractures around the ankle are treated in a manner very similar to a severe ankle sprain. The ligaments that hold the bones of the ankle together can tear in the middle of the ligament, or they can pull off a small piece of bone where the ligament typically attaches to that bone. That is the most common cause of and avulsion fracture.

Depends: If the fracturevv had ligament attached it could cause a rupture or if fragment moved it could cause tendon pain and possible joint pain. Suggest MRI to check. I take it no surgery was done?

See an orthopedist: You need to be evaluated by an orthopedist. You may need surgery to repair or remove the avulsed segment of bone but at the least you will probably need immobilization of the ankle for several days to weeks with subsequent physical therapy.

Hard to say: This depends on where in your ankle/foot the avulsion was and how severe, like any alignment issues. Your best bet is to review this issue with the doctor who made your diagnosis: hopefully an orthopedic physician.

Too soon: If you have pain on weight bearing, you need to be non-weight bearing at this time. In the absence of other complications, bone takes about 6 weeks to fully heal. Discuss with your doctor who will evaluate your condtion and progrees.
