Many things can cause your symptoms: nodules on vocal cords, infections, tumors, nerve damage, or it just might be the "way you are." thyroid might be involved, but not necessarily. Multiple causes: You could have a vocal cord polyp or nodule, you could also have reflux disease which may be more likely. Even if you do have the former, conservative treatment is the same. Speak in a normal voice - no screaming or whispering. Try to drink enough water and reduce spicy or salty foods. Prilosec otc may help if taken for 4 - 6 weeks. Laryngitis: See my tip on this. Try to rest your voice for about three days. Increase humidification in the bedroom, drink extra fluids, avoid shouting or raising your voice for about 2 weeks. This will allow the inflammation of your vocal cords to resolve. If you still have problems after instituting these measures for 2 weeks, see an ENT. ...Read more

Soon: You had surgery with general anesthesia. Your voice is hoarse because of endotracheal intubation. It can take 3-4 weeks to return to normal but could be longer if you smoke or don't rest it enough. Remember the tube sat on your vocal cords during the entire surgery. Hoarseness : It is very difficult to to make a 5 yr old to rest his voice, teach him to speak softly, indicate needs by pointing or body language, warm fluids should help, if no improvement you should consult an ENT who might need to do laryngoscopy to visualize the vocal cords & diagnose the cause of hoarseness in you son.
