A hormone (from greek ὁρμή, "impetus") is a chemical released by a cell or a gland in one part of the body that sends out messages that affect cells in other parts of the organism. Only a little amount of hormone is required to alter cell metabolism. In essence, it is a chemical messenger that transports a signal from ...Read more
Hormones: I think it depends on which hormones you are referring to as being high. Is your beta hcg higher than expected? If this is the case then maybe you are further along than first thought. Thyroid is normal: T4 can be high with normal thyroid function due to many factors. These factors are eliminated in the free T4 test, but the TSH is most important. Make sure you are taking brand name T4 replacement, as the generics, while cheaper, are unreliable. ...Read more
My hormone tests came in with high 3α-Androstanediol, high aldrosterone, high aldosterone, high 5a-THB, elevated 5α-reductase, and low 11b-hydroxyetiocholanolone. What can this mean?
Tests steroid metab: Apparently you are undergoing a work up for steroid and male hormones/androgen metabolism. These are unusual blood tests, and typically only performed when, usually a specialist, has a specific diagnosis in mind. I'm certain you can receive a better, more satisfying explanation by working with the doctor who ordered these tests. Pursuing that is your best option. Good wishes:) ...Read more
What does it mean to have high dhea sulfate levels (elevated adrenal hormones)? What are the problems associated with this? What can it lead to?
By itself: A high (how high) dheas level may mean nothing at all. I don't know why the level would have been drawn in the first place. It can be significantly (not slightly) elevated in a variety of ovarian or adrenal problems, including pcos. It is also stimulated by certain medications. As a solitary finding without other clinical information, however, it has no value. Talk w/the doctor who ordered it, . ...Read more
What can be the cause of an elevated dhea sulfate level (elevated adrenal hormones) of 599 mcg/dl? What does it mean if it's idiopathic?
Not that high: A dhea-s of 599 (correct -comes from the adrenals) is somewhat increased but will usually not cause problems. It would help to know the reason why it was done. If periods are irregular other tests were probably run and if normal would be reassuring. If periods very irregular and increased facial hair you should definitely see an endocrinologist if you have not done so to look for other things. ...Read more

Causes for high dhea sulfate (elevated adrenal hormones)? Does it mean pcos? Infertility? What are the treatments? Got period after 3 months late?
It's been six years since my dad has had prostate cancer. He has had radiation and hormone therapy. Now his gleason numbers are high now spots on spin. What doesit mean?
May have returned: Unfortunately this may mean that your father's cancer has progressed despite treatment. A high gleason score (8-10) independently predicts the odds of this as well as high psa score and abnormal exam findings. Fortunately there are many highly effective treatments available even in situations where the cancer has spread. An oncologist can help you decide on appropriate treatments for your father. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

I have0 sperm. My sonography report says that my testes aresmall and I have varicocele. My hormonal reports say that my FSH and LH is high and TSH and testosterone is normal. What does it mean?
See a urologist: What this means is that even though your circulating hormones (fsh and lh) are high, your testis is not producing sperm. It is however making normal levels of testosterone. If both testes are small and you have a varicocele, you may benefit from ligation of the varicocele in terms of sperm production. A physical examination would be helpful. I strongly recommend you consult with a urologist. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Is androgens the same as adrenal hormones? What does it mean to have elevated adrenal hormones? Does it have any problems to do with the ovaries?
Nothing: It's a lay term, not a medical one. There are literally thousands of hormones and "out of whack" in no way describes what the problem is. Hormonal medicine is very intricate and complex, and it can't be simplified into a single statement such as "our of whack". Discuss w/your physician. ...Read more
