The nerves located in the lower back can be affected by arthritic changes or disc abnormalities. The condition can be very painful and disabling, but is usually treated successfully without surgery.

Leg Pain: Exercise may be the answer to stopping your leg pain depending of the cause. Unfortunately "shooting pain down the back of the leg" does not give the diagnosis just the area of pain. Hard to comment of exercise without knowing the cause. Did you have an injury (hamstring), is there tingling and numbness with weakness (nerve problem), is it a hip problems?

R/O SCIATICA: Your age and description of symptoms is suggestive of sciatica. You need a full exam and focused Neuro exam with reflexes Checked. Also X-ray of lumbar spine and if no improvement an MRI to rule out arthritis a bulging disc or congenital back issue. Till then no heavy lifting F/U with doctor for medical treatment. NSAID/Muscle Relaxant. Also start a GF DIET WHOLEAPPROACH. COM& focus on WG LOSS.

See your doctor: Please see your doctor about this. You could be having a bout of sciatica, and need to be checked to be sure you have normal reflexes in your leg and foot. Your doctor may want to do some studies of your back also. Tylenol (acetaminophen) may help, or Celebrex (less cardiovascular risk than some other nsaids). Herbal willow bark extract may help also -- one study found it equivalent to a cox-2 inhibitor.
