Venous congestion.: Congratulations on your pregnancy! this can be an exciting time. This can also be a time of discovery for other aspects of your body. With a baby onboard, this space occupying heaviness can impede the normal venous flow from the feet and legs to the heart. Pooled venous blood in your feet is blue due to low oxygenation--in contradistinction to the red oxygenated blood flowing from the heart. Read more
Purple Foot: Poor blood circulation, which can occur on its own or as part of other conditions such as diabetes and peripheral vascular disease. Your arteries and veins are narrower and therefore there is less blood getting to the extremities such as feet and toes. I have a purple spot on the bottom of my right foot. I have had it for years with no pain, should this be a cause for concern?
My feet are almost always dark red and even purple and when I get in the tub for a hot bath my feet on the bottom almost look black?
Hot Foot.: The hot water dilates the small oxygen rich capillaries, delivering more blood to the foot. The heat increases the metabolic activity of the tissue, increasing more waste product (co2). Venous congestion slows the slows the movement of the darker blood back through the venous vessels. The water causes the light waves to shift slightly to the blue side. Not at all: Central cyanosis (blue all over) makes us worry about problems oxygenating the blood & could represent a lung problem or a shunt (extra connection) in the heart that might let blood cross from right to left & avoid the lungs. Peripheral cyanosis (blue hands, feet, lips, etc.) merely reflects sluggish blood flow through these peripheral capillaries. Very common in cold children, & not dangerous. No.: It is not unusual to see a diffuse bluish color to the feet if the baby gets a little chilled or if you are holding him upright and gripping him snugly by the thighs, but the discoloration clears with warmth or position change. Bluish purple marks on the lower back and butt called Mongoloan spots are present from birth. Does it wash off? Dye from socks can stain. If not, consider injury. Who?
