What Does It Mean When Iron Saturation Is Low
Maybe iron deficient: Low iron saturation could indicate an overall iron deficiency, but there are other blood tests that need to be done to determine this. Most common causes for iron deficiency are poor absorption from the diet and blood loss. If left untreated, low iron can lead to anemia. ...Read more
Room for iron!: Most of the body's iron is bound to that red stuff in our red blood cells, hemoglobin. The rest is bound to proteins, like the blood protein transferrin. If there are still more possible binding sites for iron on transferrin, then the iron saturation is low. This can mean that the body's storage iron is running low. It can be seen before full iron deficiency anemia develops. ...Read more
Hemoglobin 140 but low iron saturation. What does this mean? How should it be addressed? Should iron supplementation continue?
Low iron saturation suggests, low body stores of iron. Hemoglobin drops when the stores are depleted. It would be prudent to take oral and multivitamins to replenish your store of iron. Iron deficiency is not uncommon in women due to menstrual blood loss.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

What does it mean if iron saturation is consistently low (11%) but Ferritin is in normal range (34)? My 3yr old son has had these results since 9m
Quest Lab--Iron % Saturation: 17 Low, Ferritin: 13 ng/ml Low, RDW 15.1 a little high. What does this mean and what do I do about it?
Cells: RDW is the calculation of the difference in cell size. The MCV is a better indicator of the actual size of the red cells and if below 80 is considered microcytic. With iron deficiency the cells are smaller than normal. The high RDW can mean some cells are being pushed out of the marrow early and those immature forms are larger. The rest of the blood work report is needed. See provider soon. ...Read more
Low hemoglobin 9.7, hematocrit 30.7, mch24.9, platelets 419, uibc 390, iron , serum 17 iron saturation 4% what does this mean?
Iron deficiency : One with the above numbers has iron deficiency anemia. C doc, who'll ask questions in order to narrow down causes, then probably refer you for endoscopy, colonoscopy, +/-ct abd/pelvis, or +/- gyn, or +/- heme/onc depending on symptoms/ clinical findings, and most suspected cause for blood loss. This does not require emergency room visit, unless one is having acute blood loss(ex.Lo bp, black stool). ...Read more
What do these results mean? RBC, Hemoglobin, Neutrophil %, Iron % Saturation and AB Neutrophil all low? High Lymphocyte % and trace Lymphocyte in UA.
Nothing on their own: Lab values mean nothing apart from a history and physical exam. That being said, what is most concerning is the likelihood that you are iron deficient. Even more concerning would be your feeling you have to ask us rather than your personal physician, who I hope will soon have a frank talk about your anemia and the need for a serious workup to find the cause. Your life's on the line. Be proactive. ...Read more
What does a low iron saturation mean? I am eating more than enough iron rich foods. I have gastritis, i/c, internal hemroids, heavy periods..?
My iron levels are A8, ferrtin 50 and iron saturation is low as well. i regularly take iron but it is not absorbing?
Ferritin is OK.: A ferritin of 50 is normal, although your body's low iron saturation means you are using up the iron as quickly as you take it. So you may need to take a higher dose of iron. Taking iron several times a day with orange juice (or another form of acidic beverage) may help. ...Read more
First find out why: Low iron saturation may be evidence of iron deficiency. Low ferritin level would be more specific. If you suspect that you are iron deficient, you should work with a medical professional to find out why your are iron deficient and then to increase your knowledge about the different ways low iron levels can be replenished. ...Read more
Iron saturation: Iron saturation or also called transferrin saturation is how much iron an individuals body holds. To make is simple, an increased iron saturation means that you have a high amount of iron bound in your blood. Consult your practitioner as to the significant of your result. Usual adult value is between 20-50% depending on an individual. ...Read more

Take more iron!: I wouldn't worry too much about saturation. But with an iron saturation of under 25%, your body is using up the iron you are taking, so you may need to take more (or eat more iron-rich foods!) to meet your body's needs. ...Read more

Fasting will not make a material different to blood iron levels. You should start taking oral iron supplement and multivitamins to replenish your stores of iron.

My iron serum was 167 which was high & my iron saturation was 61% which was also high & UIBC was low. What causes this?
Help me interpret &health implications
iron binding (tibc). 455. High.
Uibc 430. High.
Iron serum. 25 low.
Iron saturation 5 alert.
TIBC: (tibc)iron deficiency will translate into a high total iron binding capacity( i.E: there is more space available for more iron to bind to), uibc is calculated by substracting level of iron from TIBC ( 455-25= 430), transferrin is used to transport iron, 5% saturation means only 5% of transferrin is used to bind iron, because there is not enough iron for it to bind to, (iron deficiency anemia). ...Read more
