I had a sonogram of my thyroid. I have 9 nodules/cyst. 2 solid hypoechoic heterogeneous nodules. What does this mean? Cancer?

Common problem: Nodules of the thyroid are common, especially in women. Most thyroid nodules are benign. "solid", "hypoechoic", "heterogeneous" nodules are the most common ones seen. If they are large enough (at least 1 cm), we typically recommend doing a fine needle biopsy to make sure they are benign. ...Read more

Ultrasound says hypoechoic mass with essentric fatty hilum favoring an enlarged lymph node on left side of neck. What does that mean ?

Ultrasound says hypoechoic mass with essentric fatty hilum favoring an enlarged lymph node on left side of neck. What does that mean ?

Probably benign node: When a mass is palpated in the neck it is usually abnormal and suggests a new, possibly metastatic lesion requiring bx and then therapy. If a hypoechoic mass is noted this is a solid lesion and with above description is a lymph node that is characterized by the fatty hilum. If lesion enlarges bx needed unless a primary lesion defined that may be causing nodal enlargement. Therapy then needed ...Read more

I'm a 29 y/o female. I have 6+ complex cysts on my thyroid - the largest is 1.1cm with a hypoechoic mass. All others are colloid. Should i be worried?

I'm a 29 y/o female. I have 6+ complex cysts on my thyroid - the largest is 1.1cm with a hypoechoic mass. All others are colloid. Should i be worried?

Need to follow it: The likelihood of cancer is still quite low. A lot depends on the characteristics of the cysts/nodules. If there are worrisome characteristics, surgery is indicated. It is important that the cysts/nodules be followed by someone who knows what to look for. Often an endocrinologist with ultrasound experience is better at this than a radiologist. ...Read more

Us results show 2 "hypoechoic solid nodules" on in each lobe of the thyroid. Should these be biopsied? Who decides that?

Depends...: Depends upon the size and other factors. In general, it is better to be safe and proceed with the biopsy plus appropriate blood tests. Discuss w/your doctor and see an endocrinologist if appropriate or want a second opinion. ...Read more

Can a mass on the thyroid be spread to the right lobe? because I found out that there is a solid nodule on the right lobe of the thyroid

It can: As there are types of cancer that can readily spread locally even in the thyroid. Realize it's also possible to multiple thyroid nodule on both sides without any cancer too. It sounds like you need to review this with your doctor and possibly have a thyroid ultrasound completed to visualize the area. ...Read more

Thyroid u/s: 3x2x3mm cystic nodule, ill-defined 1.6x0.8x1.0cm hypoechoic nodule r lobe; 6x3x6mm solid, slightly hypoechoic nodule l lobe- next step?

Followup exam: By age 60, about one-half of all people have a thyroid nodule, found either through examination or with imaging. Over 90% of such nodules are benign.
