Diarrhea: It is such a common complaint and so non-specific with regards to causation that it is necessary to be seen by a physician and undergo testing before one can even begin to speculate. With abdominal pain you should probably be seen soon, although not necessarily an emergency. Call you family doctor and make an appt. Hope you are better soon. ...Read more

Typical IBS symptoms: As you suspect, these symptoms indeed are consistent with irritable bowel syndrome. But they aren't particularly suggestive of proctitis (inflmmation of the rectum). Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn's disease) can cause similar symptoms as IBS, and also can cause proctitis. So I suggest you raise these questions with the doctor who diagnosed IBS then follow her advice. Good luck! ...Read more

Go to the ER now...: You should go the er immediately and have your child evaluated for a stomach or GI problem. Maybe just a viral infection but from what you describe this could be more serious. A distended abdomen in an 18 month old needs to be evaluated immediately. ...Read more

Infection: Gastroenteritis, i.e. Infection of the stomach. In your case, it seems involvement of large intestine. Adhesions from previous surgeries, causing obstruction, increase amount of use of opiates for tx of pain, volvulus, intususseption, poor peristaltic movements due to nerve damage, ischemia of bowel, dehydration, hard stool impaction, etc. Please consult your pcp, GI consultation. ...Read more
