Hypothyroidism: Your TSH is a substance made in the brain. When high it indicates the possibility that your thyroid gland is not able to make enough thyroid hormone. In some cases, it takes a repeat test to clarify this was not a false test, but at your age, and depending on how well or not you feel, it might indicate the need to start thyroid replacement treatment. Please review these tests with your doctor. ...Read more
An elevated frequently means that your thyroid gland is not making enough thyroid hormone. This is called Hypothyroidism. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) rises in an attempt to signal your Thyroid gland to make more thyroid hormone.
You may want to have it checked again to be sure. But Hypothyroidsism is easily treated with medication. ...Read more
My TSH Level is high 9.5 but T3 (liothyronine) & T4 levels are within normal range. I am taking thyroxine 50 mcg. Do u recommend change imn dosage?
Hypothyroidism: Once you are on Levothyroxine, there is no point in checking your T3 (liothyronine) or T4 levels. You should see your doctor and probably you need to take a higher dose keeping with your TSH levels. Your TSH needs to be checked 2-4 weeks after dose adjustment. Please do not increase it on your own and talk to your doctor. ...Read more
A little: It depends on the lab but that is just a bit elevated. Generally a lab test called free T4 is done when this borderline. If the free t 4 is low that would confirm that you are hypothyroid. When the numbers are borderline often down the road they will become frankly abnormal. If there are symptoms such as fatigue and weight gain then I would be more inclined to treat sooner then later. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I had my TSH level checked as I am showing signs of being hypo. The result was 2.69 which appears to be on the high end of normal. Is this borderline?
TSH: 2.69 would be considered normal by most lab references. In my lab the upper limit is 4.2. Talk to your doctor about the results. Good luck! ...Read more
Hypothyroidism: The actual thyroid hormone is T4 and t3 (liothyronine). When they are low, TSH elevates, but how high is somewhat variable, and "high tsh" per se is not dangerous. A low t4/t3 (liothyronine) can be dangerous; TSH is a good marker of thyroid function, but often it is necessary to measure ft4 or t3 (liothyronine). A mild elevation of TSH (eg. 4-10) is often without any symptoms and a normal ft4. ...Read more

Above 4.5: In most labs, a value above 4.5 is high. However, symptoms related to low thyroid correlate much better with free T4 levels, rather than tsh. There are many people with elevated tsh, normal free t4, who feel perfectly normal (subclinical hypothyroidism). Persistently high TSH levels is indicative of a failing thyroid. ...Read more
Hypothyroid: It would be helpful to know what units those test results are. TSH is typically measured as mIU/L or micro IU/ml, with normal ranges up to 4.5. Total T4 is typically measured as micrograms/dl with normal ranges of 4.5-12, but can also be measured as nmol/L with normal ranges of 60-160. The TSH appears to be out of proportion to the T4 level, but you should be taking thyroid hormone. ...Read more
