What Does High Rdw Mean
Thanks for asking!: Rdw stands for red blood cell distribution width, which is a measured parameter in a CBC test. High RDW value indicates greater variation in rbc size. This may be associated with iron deficiency anemia, folate/b12 deficiency anemia, mixed deficiency, recent hemorrhage, ...Etc. ...Read more
Blood count terms: Rdw means red cell distribution width, which is the range of values for the width of your red blood cells. A higher number could mean that you are making lots more red cells for some reason. Mch mean mean (or average) red cell hemoglobin, which is the amount of hemoglobin in each red blood cell. If it's low, this means that your cells aren't carrying as much hemoglobin as they should. ...Read more
Size variation: It means nothing by itself; plus, hopefully you know that all lab reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. Early iron deficiency raises RDW before anemia begins but often it's up for no apparent reason. Mine's usually high because I donate blood. Don't worry about it. ...Read more
Mixed bag: High GFR ---the kidney function is better than normal. If from a 24 hour urine over collection. If not, and this is from blood work, diabetes with kidney disease causing the globulin (kidney filters) to overwork or pregnancy. Rdw--nothing to worry unless anemic or too many rbcs. High creatinine-- kidney disease, excessive protein intake, bactrim/tagamet use, dehydration. ...Read more
What does an elevated RDW level mean if all other levels are within normal range? RDW level is 15.1%
MCH is high (39.8pg) MCHC is high (376g/l) and RDW is low (10%) - MCV is normal (90.6fL) - what could this mean?
Random Dist Width: Random distribution width (RDW) is a measure of the variability of the sizes (volume) of the red blood cells in a complete blood count. The lower the number, the more similar are the sizes of the red cells. The higher the rdw, the more variable are the red cells in sizes (from small to large). The variability in red cell sizes can sometimes help narrow down the causes of anemia in a patient. ...Read more
My son (13) has a slightly elevated RDW (14.8%) and a slightly low mchc reading (32.5%). What does this mean?
Anemia: A low hemoglobin (HGB) and hematocrit (hct) mean that one has anemia, or low numbers of red blood cells. A high RDW (or red cell distribution width) indicates that the red blood cells are all of very different sizes. The most common thing to cause this constellation of findings is iron defciency anemia, but other things can too so it is important that your problem be evaluated by a hematologist. ...Read more
Need a workup: Lab results mean nothing in isolation, and reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. Given that, I wouldn't be surprised if you were getting a bit iron deficient, and that's a call for a workup -- are you bleeding from something troublesome like an ulcer or tumor? Your physician should know what to do. ...Read more
What do you suggest if my RDW and lymph count is high and my MCV and MCH is low what does this mean?
See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, low mcv and mch and high RDW suggest iron deficiency anemia. It would be prudent to discuss it with your doctor who knows more about your health. ...Read more
