What does it mean if my MCH is high in a cbc?

Large red bloodcells: If the MCH level is over 34, this is considered to be too high. The main reason that the MCH level would be too high is because of macrocytic anemia. Macrocytic anemia is a blood disorder in which not enough red blood cells are produced, but the ones that are present are large (thus fitting more hemoglobin). Macrocytic anemia is often caused by having too little vitamin B12 or folic acid. ...Read more

If granulocytes is high on CBC what does this mean?

Not much: Pay attention only if the absolute granulocyte count is quite high, perhas 8000. This may indicate an infection, and it may be serious especially if there are young forms, toxic granulation or vacuolization. Most often, absoute counts that are a bit high reflect stress; twenty minutes in a cold shower can raise them to double the top of the reference range or higher. ...Read more

Need to know: Numbers. What is your total white cell count? All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. ...Read more

Need more info: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have helped to have all the results. High platelet count is often associated with iron deficiency. Please discuss the results with your doctor as the high count may predispose you to blood clots. ...Read more

CBC test results: Elevated MCHC, elevated MCH, bottom of range for Haematocrit, everything else within normal ranges. What do these results mean?

CBC test results: Elevated MCHC, elevated MCH, bottom of range for Haematocrit, everything else within normal ranges. What do these results mean?

Nothing: Your physician may want to repeat them. I trust you do not have spherocytosis or if you do, that you've been worked up. At most, a reticulocye count may be in order. Sometimes the machines can be a bit mis-calibrated. High MCHC is quite uncommon and if you feel well I wouldn't be troubled. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either end. ...Read more

I had a slightly elevated mean cell hemoglobin concentration in my recent bloodwork. Other CBC normal. What can cause this? I was fasting on that day

Probably fine: This is likely a normal variant seen in your CBC. No need to worry now. Your doctor who ordered the test might want to repeat it in a few months to make sure this is not increasing or other values on your CBC are not changed. ...Read more

My CBC results showed high MCH, NE%, NE#, and LY#, while the MO% was low. I have rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis. What do these mean?

Medication effect: It is common with RA to have an anemia. It is also common for methotrexate and some of the other RA meds to cause an increase in MCH and especially MCV. MCH is mean corpuscular Hemoglobin. It is a measure of how much hemoglobin is in each cell. NE and LY refers to neutrophils and Lymphpcytes. These are types of white blood cells and can also be affected by your disease and it's treatment. ...Read more

I had a cbc, and my mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mchc are high, what's causing it?

I had a cbc, and my mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mchc are high, what's causing it?

MCH and MCHC: Mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration look at how "red" someone's cells are. High levels are most commonly due to a laboratory artifact but can also be seen when a person has cells called spherocytes. If your CBC was otherwise normal, I wouldn't worry about it. On the other hand, if you also have a low hemoglobin and hematocrit, you should see a hematologist. ...Read more

Consult: I'm sorry about your illness. Some types of leukemia are often curable; others are not. The fact that you have written tells me that this is time for a review by a second specialist in leukemia -- not because I suspect error, but because communication may have broken down. You have an absolute right both to clear answers (outlook, options) and to feel cared-for regardless of your illness's course. ...Read more
