No gross fetal anomaly seen means what?

Unremarkable scan.: This is typical verbage for an unremarkable prenatal ultrasound. That means that the examination did not identify major fetal anomalies such as gastroschisis, omphalocele, anencephaly, spina bifida, diaphragmatic hernia, major heart/kidney/lung/skeletal defects. Congratulations - however keep in mind that even in experienced centers the detection rate of anomalies may not surpass 60-80%. ...Read more

What is meant by no gross fetal abnormalities?

What is meant by no gross fetal abnormalities?

Descriptive term: This is a general descriptive term I have seen applied to a fetal ultrasound or autopsy reports. It means there are no obvious defects that stand out on the basic lookover. Some fetal anomalies like a missing kidney or heart defect are found only with a more detailed study so this statement leaves room a problem to be found by additional study. ...Read more

Can you tell me what it means when on a fetus one of the ventricles is smaller than the other ventricle?

Can you tell me what it means when on a fetus one of the ventricles is smaller than the other ventricle?

Could be normal: I am assuming that you are talking about ventricles in the brain. Ventricles of the heart are normally different sizes before birth. Regarding the brain ventricular size discreptancy-i am not very concerned as it may be a varient of normal. Many people are walking around with slight asymmetry of the ventricles-and they are normal. Probably would get a neurosonogram after birth to get better idea. ...Read more

There are no signs of miscarrige, yet there is no fetal heartbeat. What does this mean?

There are no signs of miscarrige, yet there is no fetal heartbeat. What does this mean?

Already Answered?: First of all it takes several weeks before Heart Beat is detected (>5), second the fetal heart beat is sometimes technically difficult to hear (auscultate) due to fetal position. Once heart beat established, if fetus is moving around it does have a heart beat. Still it should be detected at each doc visit to make sure rate is appropriate for fetal age. ...Read more

I had an emergency scan and only saw the sac no fetus what does this mean?

I had an emergency scan and only saw the sac no fetus what does this mean?

Gestational sac: If you had an ultrasound with only a gestational sac, it could be either a very early pregnancy or what is called a missed abortion. If you are only 4-6 weeks you may not see a fetus, but if you are further along like 10 weeks it may be a missed abortion. That term simply means a pregnancy where there is no fetus and just placenta tissue. ...Read more

Does seeing a yolk sac mean fetus?

No: Seeing a yolk sac only lets us know that at least the pregnancy is in the right location within the uterus and not in the fallopian tubes. To confirm that it is a good, viable pregnancy, you will need a follow-up scan in a week or two to show the fetal pole with a heartbeat. The dr. Told me I was 5 weeks during a ultrasound. All we saw was a sack and a little tiny fetus. (i mean very small fetus) can you see a sack at 5 wks?

Yes: At 5 weeks a gestational sac and a very tiny fetus is all we would usually expect to see. So it sounds like you are right on track! I'm sure your doctor has you scheduled for a follow-up sono to make sure the fetus continues to grow and to document a normal fetal heart rate. ...Read more

Could a fetus measuring smaller than average mean miscarriage?

Maybe: A smaller fetus in the first trimester can mean increased risk of miscarriage. Later on in pregnancy it can mean that you have a high risk pregnancy and your doctor has to keep a close look in to the causes of the smaller fetus. A smaller fetus can mean genetic causes as well. If you are small then naturally, your fetus is small also. So, let us not worry at this time. ...Read more

What does thickening of kidney tissue mean in a 20 week fetus one md says DS the other says it means it's developing. What's your thought?

Here are some...: To save your time and avoid unnecessary worry & anxiety, it would be most beneficial to refer this question to your OB-doc who ordered the test. To interpret prenatal US of a fetus, it is good idea to correlate with your overall clinical picture and other parts of the fetus; at times, a second US in 6-8 weeks may be needed for comparison and deduction of the related clinical consistency. The fetal measurements are used to calculate the approximate gestational age. The earlier the more accurate. ...Read more
