Can the camera pill detect ulcerative colitis? I want to avoid doing a traditional colonoscopy.

Can the camera pill detect ulcerative colitis? I want to avoid doing a traditional colonoscopy.

Well yes, but...: Finding that your colon is inflamed by capsule endoscopy does not MAKE a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. The distribution of colitis, biopsy findings, IBD markers, as well as ruling out infection & ischemia are all important parts of the diagnosis. If you have UC you will likely need repeated colonoscopy surveillance with histology. Get a GI doctor who hears & can address your expressed concerns. ...Read more

Returning : Returning to the er is unlikely to help make the diagnosis. Er's are set up for emergency situations, and they cannot perform complicated testing as you know. The best thing is to establish with an excellent primary care physician, either an internal medicine or family practice physician. However, you need to know that there are some conditions that cannot be diagnosed by current technology, and it is a matter of managing the symptoms. While that is a frustrating situation, it is reality, and is something to consider as you go through this process. ...Read more

How far does a colonoscopy camera go? I'm having one tomorrow for right low abdominal pain. Does it go that far to see possible pain causes?

Hold off.: Although you may not feel it, you did have sedation, and you have no way of knowing how alcohol may react with the sedatives that you got. It's been like two weeks after my colonoscopy and i feel nauseous once in a while is that normal?

Not usual: Nausea should not be a part of the after effects of colonoscopy. I would suggest you call your doctor and discuss. Something else is going on. Depending on the findings at the time of the colonoscopy and whether you started on some medical therapy for those findings, the nausea may be related to that therapy. But if no therapy was initiated, this is an unrelated symptom after 2 weeks. ...Read more

After a colonoscopy, is it recommended to take a probiotic like Philips ColonHealth?

After a colonoscopy, is it recommended to take a probiotic like Philips ColonHealth?

No, not particularly: Effective laxative use prior to the colonoscopy should have cleared the majority of the usual short-term retained material (& associated microbiome) from your colon but is unlikely to have had any effect on the remaining microbiome which will rapidly grow back. The far bigger issues are what was happening, why the colonoscopy, what useful information was found, if any, & what you usually eat. ...Read more

A simple test: After appropriate colon preparation at home, arrive at the endoscopy center, change into a gown & IV is inserted. Once in the procedure room, final consent is obtained, IV sedation is given (there are options here--some patients choose no sedation, others want to be "out cold"), & a thin flexible tube with video camera is inserted per rectum & advanced, taking pictures, biopsies, & therapeutics. ...Read more
