Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

What to do if I have a fairly large lump on the side of my neck. the ultrasound showed a small lymph node. what now?

Watchfully wait: Most enlarged lymph nodes are reactive, meaning they enlarge in response to nearby infection or inflammation. A reactive lymph node should gradually decrease in size and return to normal within one to two weeks. If it doesn't, you should follow up with your doctor. ...Read more

Had an ultrasound on small lump on neck today, since the probe pressed on it my lump is smaller, like it pushed it in. What could it be?

Node, cyst or others: A small lump on the neck usually is a lymph node, a small sebaceous cyst or a lipoma, although it could be something else. Did the ultrasound show what it was? It is uncommon for the ultrasound to make it smaller. ...Read more

I have had an ultrasound. My neck lumps are not from lymph nodes, so what else could it be? I have 3 on right side

Few things: Could be estill small lymphnodes not picked up by us, could be things called branchial cysts which could be anatomical remnants of some clefts we had suring development as a foetus inside mother's womb, soft tissue tumors-benign ones -called lipomas/fibromas/neiurofibromas etc. If not causing pain, if not fast growing , if not identifiedas thyroid tissue sitting in some other place like neck, no worry. ...Read more

I had FBC done after finding a lump in neck. results came back "satisfactory" and nothing else was said. Still waiting on ultrasound. is that good?

I had FBC done after finding a lump in neck. results came back "satisfactory" and nothing else was said. Still waiting on ultrasound. is that good?

Yes it is!: There are many different causes for a neck lump. Taking an accurate history and performing a thorughly examination often brings forth the diagnosis. The FBC was probably performed to exclude a tumour of the blood such a lymphoma, and to see the result as 'satisfactory' is reassuring. The USS will help further with this diagnosis and don't be surprised if they say they want to a biopsy. ...Read more

My doctor has sent me for an ultrasound because of lumps in my neck, what could the test find? Could something be wrong if he's asked for a test?

My doctor has sent me for an ultrasound because of lumps in my neck, what could the test find? Could something be wrong if he's asked for a test?

Not to worry yet: Depends on the location and size of the lump. Sometimes "lump" is normal neck tissue or just a small lymph node. Getting an ultrasound doesn't necessarily something is wrong. Ultrasound of the neck can survey lymph nodes, salivary and thyroid glands, etc. ...Read more

Is a very small, half size of pea hard fixed lump on back of neck for over 3 years no change in size a concern, had ultrasound nothing out of ordinary?

Is a very small, half size of pea hard fixed lump on back of neck for over 3 years no change in size a concern, had ultrasound nothing out of ordinary?

Not to worry: We have lumps for all sorts of reasons. They are often small sebaceous cysts or nevi (moles). The fact that it hasn't changed in 3 years is a sign that it is stable and not cancerous. However, if it starts to grow or hurt, see a doctor. ...Read more

Was sent to get a neck ultrasound for a lump found during physical. The radiologist who conducted the ultrasound said she could not find the lump that my primary care dr found but instead found an oval hole on the left side of my neck that she said was in

Ultrasound: Sometimes a doctor may feel something and ask for a ultrasound. If the radiologist can not find anything then your doctor may have been feeling normal structures and was just making sure. You can ask your doctor to make a mark on your neck and repeat sonogram. I am not sure what a oval hole. It may have been a benign cyst or a benign appearing lymph nose or a lipoma. Ask them to explain. ...Read more

Small hard lump deep within neck for two months. Ultrasound results say "No visible mass. There is shadowing 5 mm calcification in the deep soft tissue of the left posterior neck, seems to correspond to a palpable lump". Feeling scared about this?

Small hard lump deep within neck for two months. Ultrasound results say "No visible mass. There is shadowing 5 mm calcification in the deep soft tissue of the left posterior neck, seems to correspond to a palpable lump".

Feeling scared about this?

Neck lump: Great that you had it checked. Did you have any sort of prior injury to that spot? Even acne can leave a calcification behind after it heals. Did the radiologist recommend repeating the sonogram in 6-12 months? Might help to see if there is a change over time. Don't worry, but do recheck it. ...Read more

I have two lumps in neck, one above clavicle and one In neck had a ultrasound which showed reactive lymph nodes. Am waiting for a blood test?

I have two lumps in neck, one above clavicle and one In neck had a ultrasound which showed reactive lymph nodes. Am waiting for a blood test?

Sounds reasonable: Lymph nodes can enlarge in response to an infectious or malignant process but sometimes they actually develop something similar to an infection even though no other infectious symptoms. In that case antibiotics are used to treat. At times more obscure infectious causes are at work and several different blood draws or imaging may be needed. If nothing found a biopsy of the node may be required. ...Read more

Hello i recently found a lump on my neck i went for ultra sound and it confermed a thyroid nodule size 2cm by 3 CM non cystic and hypervascular ?

Biopsy: Hi. Assuming your thyroid function is normal (not hyperthyroid), the thyroid nodule you describe needs fine needle aspiration biopsy for cytology (and hopefully genetic testing) to see if it's cancer. If it's not cancer, you can leave it in and just follow it, and thus avoid surgery for a non-cancerous tumor. I have to assume that whoever ordered the ultrasound has told you that you need FNAB. ...Read more

I'm 3re entity found a lump on my neck. Can't get in to an ultra sound for another week- how likely is it cancerous &what else could it be? Non smoker

Wait for ultrasound: You have a neck mass. You have to wait a week for the ultrasound. You are better off waiting a week even if it is cancer. The doctor will start with ultrasound but may also need to do a fin e needle aspiration at the same time so the diagnosis can be made. A thyroid nodule, lymph node enlarged are all possibilities. Your doctor will discuss all. ...Read more

Doctor time: It's impossible to know, without examining you, if the new lymph node swelling are related to the nodes that have been present for a year or are just a normal immune reaction to an ear or upper respiratory infection. It would be a bad idea to ignore this development. Please see your primary care physician to address this problem very soon. ...Read more
