Mri (Definition)

Mri or magnetic resonance imaging is one of the more recently developed imaging modalities available to physicians. It uses powerful magnets to generate images. There is no ionizing radiation which is a major advantage over many other modalities. Mri is the best imaging exam that we have for most soft tissue and joint related problems. There are radiologists ...Read more

Not sure of question: It sounds like your doctor found a "mass" in your neck above your collar bone and recommended an MRI. This confirmed the presence of lymph nodes in the same area, some of which were slightly large, at the upper ("top normal") limit of normal. These could be reactive... responding to some inflammation/infection nearby or neoplastic (tumor). Depending on other symptoms, observation or biopsy is next ...Read more

Would a MRI of the brain show a posterior mass in the neck since they are close in proximity? Or would an MRI of the neck specifically be needed?

Would a MRI of the brain show a posterior mass in the neck since they are close in proximity? Or would an MRI of the neck specifically be needed?

Do a proper study: If even part of a neck mass is on the head study, it should be noted in the report. If it is not mentioned, it likely wasn't covered.
MRI images are generated by choosing "pulse sequences" which are meant to evaluate certain tissue for specific findings. Neck and head technique does differ.
Find out from your provider if MR workup of the neck is warranted in the first place. ...Read more

If someone goes an MRI on the neck would that show everything or depends what you are looking for?

If someone goes an MRI on the neck would that show everything or depends what you are looking for?

Depends: An MRI of the neck can either be targeted to look at the cervical spine and discs or can be targeted to look at everything in front of those (ie lymph nodes, salivary glands, pharynx, etc). In either case it won't show "everything, " but depending on the type of symptoms, it may be the best test. ...Read more

Neck arm pain so severe I can't do anything in morning but gets better in afternoon. Mri shows cervical hnp 4-5-6-7.Can hnp exhibit varying sx.?

Yes: Herniated nucleus pulposis can vary in symptoms from no symptoms in some people to pain and paralysis in others. On arising increased pain can be due to postural changes at night or to the fact that on recumbancy body fluids shift from our lower body to our upper putting pressure on sensitive areas. On arising the fluids reshift. ...Read more

An MRI shows I have two herniated disks in my neck that causes me pain often, what is the best treatment?

Two directions: 1. If no direct effect on nerves or spinal cord, do not operate but use conservative p.T., and perhaps motorized cervical traction. An epidural steroid injection may help. Over time the disks may dessicate and shrink.
2. Nerve compression, spinal cord compressioin, indications for potential surgery.
3. Have spinal surgeon evaluate. ...Read more

Brain MRI tmrw. I think the pain may be neck posture (leaning head back). Will this show up on the scan if it is the case?

Possibly: Without knowing your exact symptoms, it is difficult to determine whether a brain MRI will find the source of pain. Since your doc has likely done a thorough history and physical, he/she is likely to have some ideas what might be going on with you. A brain MRI should be able to find many things in your head and upper neck that might be causing your pain and should at least r/o serious problems. ...Read more

How is a facet injection done in the neck? And when is it donw? Can a cervical MRI show a root nerve impingement in the neck? Please help

X-Ray Flouroscopy: Facet Joint Injection is done under x-ray guidance with special equipment to help guide the needle. Its done for neck pain due to facet joint arthritis or facet syndrome/whiplash. MRI may show nerve root impingement, however the limitation the MRI has is its a static image and unfortunately your spine and discs move so can't see that movement. Consider Weight-bearing MRI for better clarity. ...Read more
