What Does A Swallow Test Show
My barium swallow test was negative for anything. What j's the difference of a modified swallow? Will it show something different.?
Card to say: Perhaps the doctor doing the swallow saw something that he says should be followed. You say why you had the swallow in the first place. But if some of the barium went down the wrong pipe like the lung they may want to see why. You should have a talk with your doctor. Fluoroscopy does involve radiation. In the hands of an experienced radiologist this will be kept to minimum ...Read more
It depends: A routine barium swallow will show gross functional abnormalities of the epiglottis, for example aspiration of the liquid barium. It could possily show a mass if the mass was large enough. A specialized barium swallow, a swallowing study performed with barium infused foods of varying consistency (eg pudding), can better evaluate the function of the epiglottis. Laryngoscopy or CT/MRI may have role ...Read more
Can barium swallow test show an esophageal diverticulum which was not seen with upper endoscopy 2 months ago?
Eso diverticulum: This is possible but not very common. The reason for this may be the fact that the endoscopy failed to diagnose the diverticulum or that it developed in the interim. Barium swallow is very sensitive test for diverticulum. Also, doing an endoscopy in this case can be dangerous since the endoscope may perforate the diverticulum. ...Read more

Gastric sleeve leak...had CT scan, GI swallow test, and endoscopy and all show no leak. When drink blue dye it shows up on jp drain???? Why
Limits of studies: All above studies done to detect leak have their limitations and sometime clinical suspicion is the best test!!! Hopefully the leak is small because it did not show on all these tests. Typically situation like this can be managed without need for further operation unless patient is very sick (septic) however surgeon on the case can give the best opinion after evaluating the whole picture. ...Read more

My new boyfriend smokes pot all the time, I'm curious if his semen will effect a drug test, considering I swallowed it?
I heard barium swallows can be dangerous and cause shock to the body among other things. Anyone ever have this test done?
Simple safe test: The main discomfort form a barium swallow is having to drink the contrast (barium sulfate) for visualization of structures. The modified barium swallow is used to evaluate swallowing. The main side effect you can get is constipation. The only people at risk for problems are those that have a severe swallowing problem if a significant amount of barium goes to the lungs. ...Read more
This didn't happen and hopefully never will but I've been reading dangers of toddlers swallowing button batteries. How soon would symptoms show and what?
Sudden colic: It is hard to define the delay before symptoms as ingestion is often unrecognised. Abdominal cramps/pain/sudden change in behavior may be your only signs. The button battery generates an electrical current that can destroy tissue and the battery eats through the wall of the stomach or intestines. This allows digestive debris including germs to leak into the inside of the body. Disaster is predicatble. ...Read more
