What does a positive ANA test mean?

What does a positive ANA test mean?

Antibodies vs nuclei: The titer (how much antibody power is present) is important -- 1:40 seldom means much, 1:320 would worry most folks -- as does the pattern, but like all lab tests, its meaning comes from the setting. Typically a screen for lupus and related diseases, many older folks who are healthy run a low titer. ...Read more

Ana (Definition)

An "ana" is a blood test used to screen a person for the possibility of several autoimmune diseases. It is important to remember that this is a screening test and a positive result only indicates more testing may be warranted. No blood test is perfect, and getting to a diagnosis is usually much more complex than drawing blood and looking at a number ...Read more

I have a positive ANA test but it reads as 6? I'm used to seeing them as 1:40, 1:80 etc... What does 6 mean?

Possibly nothing: This is certainly non-standard reporting. It suggests that on cannot have confidence in the reporting laboratory and the test should be repeated elsewhere. ...Read more

I recently got a positive ANA test 1:80 homogenous with no other symptoms. What does this mean? 32 yrs old healthy.

I recently got a positive ANA test 1:80 homogenous with no other symptoms. What does this mean? 32 yrs old healthy.

Positive ana: 1:80- not that high. Worry if > 1:160.Ana tests for autoimmune disease. In recent study ~13% of well blood donors had + ana with no symptoms, of those, 72% did not develop any issues with ~ 4 years of follow up. Sometimes other conditions like thyroiditis, mono, chronic disease, multiple sclerosis can cause positive ana as can meds :INH,hydralazine, procainamide remicade (infliximab). FU with rheumatologist. ...Read more

I have a positive Ana test at 1:16 homogenous. Lots of symptoms with numbness/fatigue. I don't understand what the result means can someone help?

A positive ANA test 1;320 titer, with a speckled pattern... Does it mean I have an autoimmune disease...

Not necessarily: The ANA is a screening test for lupus but is not specific. It can be positive in numerous other diseases and in normal people. It has to be evaluated in the context of the clinical picture and the results of other autoantibody tests. ...Read more

I had a positive Ana test 1:640 (homogenous) 7 years after thryroidectomy due to graves. I'm undergoing ivf- how will this effect me & what it means?

It may: Your ANA is positive at high enough titer to warrant further investigation. Having had Graves you are more susceptible to auto-immune disorders. Make sure your fertility doctor knows about lab findings. ...Read more

Does a Positive ANA Antibodies, IFA test mean I could have an STD? What STDs are Positive ANA test? Is an ANA Antibody test a standard test for STDs?

Antinuclear antibody: Antinuclear antibody testing is useful for someone with signs and symptoms of an autoimmune disease - anemia, arthritis, kidney disease, inflammation of the heart and lungs. It is not a test for STDs. However, a test for syphilis, the VDRL, was once used as a test for autoimmune disease! Please call your doctor to explain your ANA. What does it mean to have a positive ANA blood test?

What does it mean to have a positive ANA blood test?

Nada without disease: If you do not have a clinical disease or symptoms then it simply means you have a positive test ( maybe 1/3 of the population has a "positive" test). If the titer is very high ( greater than 1:640) you should probably be followed to see if a disease is developing. ...Read more

What does dual pattern on a positive ANA blood test mean ? Other blood work is fine?

What does dual pattern on a positive ANA blood test mean ? Other blood work is fine?

Depends on symptoms: ANA is a screen for lupus. The pattern was used in the past to assist in diagnosing lupus and related conditions, but we have better tests (i.e. Ena panel) that has made patterns less useful. But you cannot over interpret this test: ANA positivity, regardless of pattern, is not helpful without knowing your symptoms. Everything boils down to symptoms;; rheum md would be very helpful. ...Read more

I had a positive ANA and jo-1 test what does that mean? I was being seen for numbness and tingeling in both legs and feet and weakness in both?.

Possible muscle dz: These tests are seen in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies including dermatomyositis and poly myosotis. The tests are not specific. It requires other testing to determine if you actually have this type or rare disease. You should see a rheumatologist for an evaluation especially if you have an elevated CPK blood test. ...Read more

Hi, I have been suffering of dizziness and headaches, and joint pains. I just had blood tests and I have a positive ANA. what does it mean?

Not diagnostic: A positive ANA suggests that you may be more prone to develop an autoimmune disease but many people with positive ANA do not have any autoimmune problem. You will need more definitive tests and exam to find out if you do have an autoimmune problem-> your symptoms. A rheumatology consult is recommended. ...Read more

What does a positive ana go 1:80 mean and a result of homogeneous?

Need more info: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. How old are you? Do you have any symptoms? ANA is one of the markers of autoimmune diseases like Lupus, but is not sufficient by itself to diagnose SLE. It would be prudent to talk to the doctor who ordered the test. What does a positive ANA 1:160 with speckled pattern mean?

Not much by itself: An ANA of 1:160 is a low titter and can be seen in healthy people. The speckled pattern is commonly associated with lupus but is not enough to make a diagnosis especially when the titer is very low. Your doctor should look at all that is going on and help to determine if i is meaningful. ...Read more

What happens with a positive ANA test even thought i don't have a titer result yet?

See details: A positive screen means nothing. You need a titer to know if the test is truly positive. A positive can be seen in numerous diseases and even in normals. The result needs to be correlated with the clinical picture. ...Read more
