Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

Could I have kidney failure if the ultrasound was normal?

Yes: The kidney is responsible for excreting waste and maintaining salt and water balance among many other functions. These are performed by special cells with enzymes/proteins within the kidney at an ultrastructural level
the function of the kidney may be reduced even if the ultrasound is normal. Ultrasounds are useful to detect size and shape of kidneys and see if the urine flow is blocked. ...Read more

My kidney function was not so good 5 months ago, but still in normal range, now on ultrasound, one kidney is 100mm and other 90mm, is this normal?

Normal size: The renal length varies with height and weight and decreases slowly with age. Right kidney is usually slightly smaller than the Left. Normal size ranges from 9-12 cm (90-120 mm) and the difference in size should not exceed 2 cm. **So the size of the kidneys is normal. Besides size the texture of the kidney (Its "Ecogenicity") is often increased in chronic renal disease. ...Read more

What else can look like lots of small kidney stones in ultrasound?

Calcifications: Calcifications in blood vessels can sometimes look like kidney stones. If your doctors are unclear about whether or not you have kidney stones they may want to do a CT scan which is a better test than US for detecting and diagnosing kidney stones. ...Read more

What do you mean by the result of my ultrasound and "normal sized kidneys with diffuse parenchymal changes bilateral?

Medical renal diseas: Ultrasound exam of kidneys can show dilatation of collecting system or hydronephrosis or medical renal disease involving parenchyma usually with increased echogenicity, brighter than normal. Sounds like possibly some medical problem as opposed to obstructive problem. Medical renal disease correlated with blood tests of function of kidneys. ...Read more

I had a ultrasound of my bladder and kidneys and the report said "Unremarkable Scan" but it said "under-distended bladder" so would they see that ok?

I had a ultrasound of my bladder and kidneys and the report said "Unremarkable Scan" but it said "under-distended bladder" so would they see that ok?

It depends: How under distended the bladder was and what your clinician was looking for. If your doc was looking for things like bladder outlet obstruction, an undistended bladder pretty much rules that out. If they are looking for things like bladder wall thickening, a collapsed bladder might make that impossible to see. But if the bladder is at least partially distended, usually the scan is ok. ...Read more

I have been diag w/ ic, when I went to a urolgist about my kidneys, due to an ultrasound tht showed hydronephrosis. Ctscan normal? Inpain

Probably ok, but...: Ic is usually diagnosed by good history, physicals, ua, voiding pattern, voiding chart, etc. And rarely requires renal ultrasound. Once ultrasound shows "something" - hydronephrosis, so ct is done and normal. So, I would ignore the concern about the kidney, but focus on the concern over the bladder and other pelvic organs plus GI systems. So, with these in mind, go to see expert for detailing... ...Read more

Hi, I have had fevers and anemia (94g/l) for 2 years. I have protein+1 in my urine but my acr test was normal and my kidney ultrasound was normal.?

Problems: Your anemia (a) is due to something. Are you losing blood, is your marrow not making red blood cells, do you have a chronic disease, do you have hemolysis of cells, or do you have a hemoglobinopathy? What does your doc say about your a? Your proteinuria needs to be quantified with a 24 hour urine collection that will also reveal your kidney function. Have your physician get some blood work also. ...Read more

Liver enzymes normal history kidney stones pain right side why ultrasound?

Liver enzymes normal history kidney stones pain right side why ultrasound?

Easy and safe: Ultrasound is very safe and easy, and it can tell you if there is something wrong with your kidney (stone, dilated collecting system, etc). It can also look at the liver, if needed, at the same time. It is an excellent first step to visualize a problem. If you get an answer, you're done, and you don't have to go through a ct, mri, etc. ...Read more

I had an ultrasound today and one of the nodes below my jaw was kidney bean shaped like above is this normal?

Sub-mandibular node: A lymph node below the jaw, what is referred to as a sub-mandibular node, is not an uncommon finding. In a young person with no other nodes to feel, this probably reactive due to inflammation of infection within the mouth and it is most likely tender to touch. If that is the case then the node will shrink as the inflammation/infection resolves. If id does not seek the opinion of your PCP. ...Read more

Kidney stone??: If you truly had a kidney stone it is supposed to be one of the worst back pains there is and it is usually treated in the ER by putting an IV live in you and pushing in fluids until you pee it out. They try to capture the "sand" analyze it and modify your diet, hoping that you won't make another. It can be benign: Cysts are common in the kidneys. So ask your doctor to confirm if it is cystic or solid structure. Cysts are benign fluid filled structures whic can be left alone. Solid lesions can be a tumor and may need to be removed. Repeat follow up in 6 months can be reassuring if there is no further increase in size. Can holding urine cause a vessel to appear tightened during an ultrasound of the kidney? All of my bloodwork was normal but the ultrasound was flagged

Post void incontinence, ultrasound bladder, kidney and prostate normal, after voiding showed bladder empty normal, awaiting uroflowmetry resul, concern?

Here are some. ..: For postvoid incontinence, I assumed you have so-called postvoid dribbling after you ripped in the penis into underwaer, which is indeed very annoying. You may try correctly milking the entirely urethra after each voiding by wiping the urethra x 3-4 times from the area behind scrotum toward the end of penis until "dryness" before zipping in the penis. Do this first. Due to 400-letter limit, end. . ...Read more

Kidney disease..: This could be caused by a number of reasons: common ones include diabetes, medication side effects, inflammatory diseases. It al depends what conditions you suffer of. If it is not related to something obvious you might need a biopsy. In order to have a final answer you would need to see a Nephrologist (Kidney doctor). ...Read more

Had ultrasound done on abdomen report said unremarkable liver gallbladder and spleen but said my right kidney was slightly small measured size kidney.

Had ultrasound done on abdomen report said unremarkable liver gallbladder and spleen but said my right kidney was slightly small measured size kidney.

Likely insignificant: The renal length varies with height and weight and decreases slowly with age. Right kidney is usually slightly smaller than the Left. Normal size ranges from 9-12 cm (90-120 mm) and the difference in size should not exceed 2 cm. So the right kidney being "slightly" smaller is likely insignificant. If you have the actual measurements you can interpret them using the above
guidelines. ...Read more
