What does low MCV 74 low MCH 23.7 high RDW 16.6 mean? Everything else normal. CMP ,LDH, CBC- freaking out! Can this be Vitamin Deficiency?
Iron deficiency: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, what you provided suggests iron deficiency. Consult the doctor who ordered the tests. You may take oral iron and multivitamin supplements. ...Read more

Had another cbc. My RBC were 5.8. Up from 5.7 , hemoglobin 17.3. Up from 16.9. & hemotacrit 51.0 same as last time. Rdw 11.1. (low) is itpolycythemia?
Yes,i is polycythemi: Are you a smoker, are you living in a hilly area because these things can cause secondary polycythemia by less oxygen in the blood stimulating the bone marrow. But in addition to red cell count if white count and platelet count, the other 2 cellular types in the whole blood in addition to whole blood then it needs to be evaluated by a hematologist as it could be a condition called polycytemia vera. ...Read more
I recently had a CBC test done and they found mcv-low, mch-low, rdw-high, and they found presence of nrbc's but i don't know how many. Reason for going in: headaches. What could it be?
NRBC: And the "indices" suggest a need for a heme consult. You didn't mention wbc, platelets or hematocrit/hemoglobin. Nrbc's are immature red cells, but it infers the bone marrow may be crowded out. Headaches doesn't help. The scenario can be serious. Leukemia and metastasis on the list, but you need moer information and I do too. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Cbc done - hgb, hct low(10.6/33.3). The mcv, MCH and MCH were borderline low. The RDW high. Donated blood 1 month previous with 12.9 hgb. ? Diagnosis
Not enough data: Most cbc's only tell us what numerically is wrong. The only sure way to tell a CBC is abnormal is to look at the peripheral smear. Your indices indicate that you may be iron deficient, however that requires a thorough assessment for blood loss from the gi, gu and respiratory tract. If you donate blood, you can exacerbate the iron deficiency. ...Read more

Iron def anemia: You have iron deficiency anemia-from your blood work provided. You need iron supplement-but most importantly to find out why you have iron deficiency anemia. Bleeding/blood loss- , malabsorption of iron in the stomach, or poor nutrition status/not enough intake of iron from the food could be the cause. Go to see your pmd and have more eval. If needed, referral to a hematologist can be done by pmd. ...Read more

Need a work-up.: You might have one or more issues here. You have a low WBC count with about 75% lymphocytes, which can mean a leukemia or lymphoma. In addition you've a high RDW and low mch, with a normal rbc count which can mean that cells are being pushed out of your bone marrow by whatever is affecting your wbcs. You should see your doctor for more tests, a look at your blood smear, and a full work-up. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My brother and i both have the thalassemia trait but we are both very healthy. We both had CBC and cmp tests. We have high RBC and rdw, low mch, low mchv, and low wbc. Is the low wbc/neutrophil a problem?
African American?: African americans often have absolute neutrophil counts that are slightly lower than caucasians. There are many reasons for slight variations in the normal wbc, including alterations in the marginated (attached) vs demarginated (circulating) pools. Being otherwise well, i wouldn't worry about this. As physicians, we are trained to treat patients, not numbers. Cheers. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Discuss it: You didn't give the values, but if they're not way out-of-range, I'd check you for thalassemia minor. If you have it, it's worth knowing as marrying another person with it can be a disaster for your children. I can't explain the high platelets, though the common cause is coexisting iron deficiency which can complicate this stuff. Pure iron deficiency might show low RBC instead. ...Read more
