What Does A Low Pulse Rate Mean
What can cause dizziness and a low pulse rate (44-60 bpm). EKG, X-ray, blood work, CT scan are all normal except for low potassium.
Dizzy with low pulse: Hello JCortes, that's a really tough set of symptoms because there can be so many causes of dizziness. The first thing to come to my mind though when I hear low blood pressure though is medications, especially blood pressure medicine. If you're taking any medicine, prescribed or not prescribed, you should probably see your doctor or google them and check for common side effects. Good luck :) ...Read more
Low pulse rate. I am 37. Not in great shape. At rest it gets. Down in the low 50s bpm. Should I be concerned?
Sign of health: Actually, even though you consider yourself to be not in great shape, the slow pulse suggests you're better than you think. Heartrate is regulated by need and during rest, a slow hr is entirely normal so long as your metabolic need is normal as yours obviously is. A rapid resting rate is much more ominous. ...Read more
Various possibility: There are a number of possibilities for low heart rate, this could be due to intrinsically low heart rate as a result of being fit, from the effect of medications, from being in pain and having a vasovagal syndrome, or some cardiac reason. I cannot tell for sure, but my guess is that you are probably fit, and with some pain from the c-section, this is causing a vasovagal syndrome. ...Read more
Viagra (sildenafil): Viagra (sildenafil) can cause low blood pressure. That is why we don't give it with the drug family of nitroglycerine. If your blood pressure doesn't rise with sexual activity or if you just take viagra (sildenafil) and it lowers your BP while your heart is slow and it doesn't speed up, you could pass out. ...Read more
Beta blocker (5 mg bystolic) @ am causing low pulse rate low 50 day time and high 30 to low 40 while sleep. Is this ok/any risk. I take amlodipine @pm
Talk to your Dr: I would not call your beta blocker as the problem--it is not a high dose, and should not have that pronounced of an effect through the entire day into the night. You may just have a low resting heart rate, in which case other class (-es) of meds may be better options for you. Should discuss your concerns w/your dr--otherwise will never know about this! ...Read more

My mother is 70 yrs old with high BP usually 170/90, low pulse rate of 55, low sodium and changes observed in echo. What is your advise?
Evaluate by doctor: High BP w slowish heart rate, abnormal heart function (abnl echo) and low sodium implies excessive activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (causing free water retention and thereby lowering the sodium concentration in the bloodstream. This can lead to chf. ...Read more

After rest?: I assume you mean after you've cooled down from exercise (that is, it was fast during exercise and then slowed down). That's a healthy response called "recovery time". If you're slow during exercise, you have a problem, see your doctor. If you're slow after exercise, you're a seasoned athlete. ...Read more

A prompt evaluation: High blood pressure with a low pulse could be to due to a slow heart rate giving the heart has more time to fill so higher than normal volumes are pushed out creating high blood pressure. High blood pressure could signal your heart to slow down in an attempt to bring blood pressure down. There are other factors and prompt evaluation by a physician is indicated. ...Read more
Depends.: Low pulse rate associated with symptoms or below 50 without meds probably requires some investigation. The degree of BP elevation determines how "dangerous" it is. In elderly patients it is often reasonable to accept higher baseline bp's rather than to push medications. If I can get a BP down to 140/90 range without side effects in an 80 year old I am generally pleased. ...Read more
