Depends...: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/red_blood_cell_distribution_width -- RDW is a measure of the variation of red blood cell (rbc) volume. What it indicates depends on the context of other lab values and history and physical exam. ...Read more
RDW: High RDW indicates increased variability in red cell size, called anisocytosis, which is commonly found in nutritional deficiency such as iron, folate, (folic acid) and vitamin b12. High RDW alone is not specific. Combination of MCV and rdw, retic can be more suggestive. Sometime increased rbc frament can also give high rdw. Thus a blood smear review is usually helpful for high rdw. ...Read more
What CBC test measure has high norm limit 4.9 (7 y/o boy) and what is significance of 5.8 level? Also, what is a "shift to the left" on a cbc? Thanks!
Shift to left : Shift to left (or "left shift") on a CBC means that there are more neutrophils or bands then normal. This can be a sign for bacterial infections or an early response to infection. Guessing that the 4.9 value is for rbc? Rbc count tells you how many red blood cells there are. Better to ask the doctor who has the test result for a complete answer. ...Read more
CBC allergy: Usually the part of the CBC that relates to allergies is the eosinophil count. Eosinophils can be elevated in a variety of conditions including certain types of allergies such as drug allergy, certain types of infections such as parasite infections and many other causes. Eosinophil elevation is non-specific and additional testing and patient information is needed to figure out cause of elevation. ...Read more

Chest exam: You should see your doctor for an evaluation. Usually the protrusion is related to the rib cage bones and sternum, but a physical exam and possibly a chest x-ray would be helpful. ...Read more
What would you see on a CBC test that might indicate a pt has AML? How high or low would the patients levels on CBC be?
Abnormal cells: The diagnosis of AML would depend on the presence of immature cells in the blood. It is not how high or low but how abnormal the cells are. Upper left adomen pain going to back and lower adomen. Pancreatic enyz normal and CBC normal.Worse when i eat any guesses what this may be? Er?
It could be ulcer: The complications of duodenal or gastric cancer are bleeding , perforation , penetration , obstruction of the pylorus etc. When there is penetration , the ulcer perforates posteriorly . This is felt as pain radiating to the back . I would recommend to see gastroenterologist or go to the ed depending on your condition. Blood works are very helpful but they are not always abnormal. ...Read more
Left tonsil double the size of right- been like this for atleast a year from what i remember- 2 ents and primary have looked at it , CBC normal..
Follow up: Enlargement of only one tonsil is unusual in infections and since the tonsil has been enlarged for almost a year it doesn't appear to be an active infection. It was important and reassuring that you had it checked by an ENT specialist who felt it was a benign finding. I also recommend having it followed by that ENT to make sure that it doesn't increase in size or undergo any changes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What does an elevated rbc count of 5.93 and Hct of 52.7 indicate in 70 year old male? Only other CBC abnormality is absolute monocytes of 1003.
Polycythemia: Elevated red blood cell parameters are concerning for polycythemia. Polycythemia can be reactive to another condition in the body (like chronically low oxygen) or without other associated medical conditions (polycythemia vera). Absolute monocytosis may be related. It has been noted in scientific literature as also seen in polycythemia vera. ...Read more
