What does a high white blood cell count and high platelet count mean?

What does a high white blood cell count and high platelet count mean?

Hematology workup: The elevation of these 2 parameters of the CBC (complete blood count) may reflect infection or inflammation. However, depending on the chronicity and extent of rise, it may also be associated with bone marrow problems such as myeloproliferative diseases. I suggest a hematology consultation and workup to sort out the underlying cause(s). ...Read more

What does it mean when you have low red blood count, low hemoglobin, low hemocrit and high platelet count?

What does it mean when you have low red blood count, low hemoglobin, low hemocrit and high platelet count?

Anemia: A low red blood cell count is called anemia. Anemia can be further classified as microcytic when due to iron deficiency, or macrocytic when due to B12 deficiency. Sometimes we have a low blood cell count from bleeding or several other disorders. Elevated platelets are called thrombocytosis. Platelets are an acute phase reactant and elevate for several primary and secondary reasons. ...Read more

Normal ranges: Each lab must establish their own normal range for the tests they offer, so there can be some variation between labs. In general, platelets run between 150k-450k/ml These ranges cover 95% of the normal people they test, so 5% of normal people will have values outside the range. The closer a person's values are to the range=more likely normal. Wife's values likely normal for her. ...Read more

WBC 12,600 high
Causes of concern? All related?

You are mixed up!: Your platelet count is perfectly normal(Normal level ranges from 150,000 to 300,000. WBC count should be under 10,000...so your WBC count is a bit high. Check and let us know about your Hemoglobin(Hb) level? If it is <12 Gms, then you have a problem which will require you to go see your PCP to find out the cause of your low Hb and high WBC count. ...Read more

Blood tests show high mean platelet volume, low platelet count, high urobilinogen, high WBC, high clumpy platelet morphology. Related? conerns?

Why the tests?: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it might have helped to have the actual values rather than high and low. Why were the tests done? It would be prudent to discuss these with the doctor who ordered the test as s/he knows more about your health.

Many things.: High platelets can occur with bleeding, iron deficiency and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. They can be high due to a blood disorder (myeloproliferative neoplasia). Platelets also can be elevated in response to serious illnesses. A question: what causes a high platelet count along with a high white blood cell count at the same time?

Reactive or ?: The CBC (complete blood count) consists of many lab numbers, but 3 important ones are the hemoglobin (hgb, a measure of red cells), white blood cell count (WBC) and platelet (plt) count. Wbc and plts may both increase as a result of a reaction such as infection (eg pneumonia), inflammation (arthritis), etc. If prolonged and/or very high it may indicate a bone marrow problem. ...Read more

How can I get my blood platelet count go down, if it's been a bit high on 2 blood tests?

Thrombocytosis: The most common cause of an elevated platelet count is iron deficiency anemia. Some people are born with thrombocytosis. Other causes include chronic infection or inflammation, metastatic cancer, and essential thrombocythemia, a bone marrow disorder which causes excessive production of platelets. For the correct diagnosis and treatment, you will need to see a hematologist. ...Read more

High white blood cell and platelet count, is this bad?

High white blood cell and platelet count, is this bad?

Cause: There are some primary bone marrow problems that can raise WBC (eg, leukemias like cll) or platelets (pv, et). Far more likely is an inflammatory reaction such as infection causing an increase in "acute phase reactants". More context is needed. Since someone ordered the complete blood count (CBC) for a reason, what was that reason, and what was that physicians interpretation? ...Read more

What does Platelet anisocytosis mean on blood smear? Platelet count is 454K. (10 days ago it was 482K)

Both are normal.: Most labs use as a normal range for platelets to be 150, 000 to 450, 000. The slight increase you wrote of are not concerning. Anisocytosis refers to change in size---not all the same size platelets. Large platelets can be associated with many things, including bone marrow replacement with younger platelets. Smaller platelets can be associated with different genetic conditions or may be normal. ...Read more

Blood tests: There are a few diseases that leap out from blood tests. Most of the time, however, blood tests don't tell the doctor much on their own. These results fall into the second group, not very specific. Would review with your internist with more history and physical details. Best of luck. ...Read more

High WBC count.: In what you’ve provided here, your WBC count is high, which in and of itself could suggest infection or inflammation. The platelet count is likewise high, but this could be just reactive (the platelet count is an acute phase reactant) or it could mean that the bone marrow is generally proliferative.
