What Does A Bulging Fontanelle Look Like
Get checked: If you are checking the fontanelle while your baby is laying down, then it may appear bulging due to gravity, so sit the baby up and check it. If it is still bulging or if the baby has a fever or is lethargic or inconsolable and very cranky then get your baby checked immediately. ...Read more
In an infant, the space where two skull-bone sutures join forms a membrane-covered "soft spot" called a fontanel (fontanelle). The fontanels allow for growth of the skull during an infant's first year. The fontanels should feel firm and very slightly curved inward to the touch. A tense or bulging fontanel occurs when fluid builds up in the skull cavity or when pressure increases in the brain (increased intracranial pressure). When the infant is crying, lying down, or vomiting, the fontanels may look like they are slightly bulging, but they should return to normal when the infant is in ...Read more
My baby has a hard bump on the back right side of his head. I've read that this could be a bulging fontanelle, which worries me. Should I be concerned?
Bruising ?: The anterior and posterior fontanelle are both midline, so if the bulge is posterior and right sided, the likely cause is some form of scalp bruising, most likely cephalhematoma, if a hard bump. Your only concern should be jaundice, not brain damage, as this scalp bleed is not intracranial, or within the skull, it is more superficial than that... ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Bulging fontanelle in 10 mths a sign for hydrocephalus due to IV hemorrhage. No other symptoms. Neurologist wants to wait for next appt in 3 weeks ?
It may be prudent : to ask your pediatrician for referral to a pediatric neurosurgeon who shares patients with your pediatric neurologist. Also, if the same person in the pediatrician's office checks baby's head circumference sequentially, an increase in head size may be noticeable even over a few days. Craniosyostosis: The pediatrician is concerned that the child may have elevated intracranial pressure. This can come from a number of things including premature fusion of the bone plates of the skull. A craniofacial plastic surgeon needs to evaluate this to ensure proper development. If the bones are fused then surgery may be required. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers

My 6mnth LG'sp fontanelle is slightly bulging this morning. She is not feverish or fussy. She is eating & drinking as normal. Should I be concerned?
I wouldn't worry: Kudos that you're noticing these things. Don't get too obsessive. And no need to be pressing it really. Imagine if someone were messin' with your fonatanelle! Your baby is fine. If they change their behavior, develop a fever, a rash, diarrhea, strong odor to their urine, or reduce their feeding habits then, time to visit the pediatrician. What would veins in the stomach look like in cirrhosis? Mine are not bulging but you can see the blue veins. I was told 2 yes ago I had fatty liver
It's complicated: generally you wouldn't see the veins so there is blood backing up from the liver. Fatty liver occurs commonly and does not necessarily mean anything. Most commonly it is connected to intake of things that become fat (including alcohol). Veins become increasingly bulging. ...Read more
Why my baby's anterior fontanelle smell different than the other body parts? The smell is not that bad but im confuse what make it smell like that?
No scientific reason: I can't think of a scientific reason for this, nor do I know the age of your baby. It is not unusual for babies to develop a "cradle cap" rash which can have a distinct smell. Are there scaly patches on the babies scalp? If you see nothing, then I would not give it a second thought. In fact, the best thing for the " cradle cap" rash is to ALSO do nothing! Enjoy your baby! ...Read more
Soft spot on head is bulging is a symptom in which the soft spot (fontanelle) on top of a baby's head is more firm than usual, and is pushing up the scalp (bulging) a small amount.
