Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

It is normal to: cough more right after a nebulization treatment. The medication loosens up the mucous in the airway passages. However, if he is wheezing more or having difficulty breathing, or he seems to need a treatment in less than 2 hours, you should call his pediatrician. He may need to be re-checked and/or his medications adjusted. Read more

Cough for a week, no fever, very little nasal congestion. Crackling sound when breathing. 28 year old smoker. Could it be bronchitis?

It's likely: Is the cough productive? If you are bringing up phlegm (sputum), it is likely to be infection, the chances of which are greatly increased by smoking. If the sputum is yellow or green, or foul smelling, it may be a bacterial infection, although without fever that is less likely. Cut down or stop smoking, at least until it clears, and consider permanent cessation. Your lungs are sending u message. Read more

Asthmatic: Bronchitis is very common and some believe is due to allergc reaction to colonizing bacteria in the bronchial tubes The treatment is usually simultaneous administration of an antibiotic and anti asthmatic inhaler (s) X ray will be negative. Suggest you discuss this possibility with your Primary Care Physician.

Bronchitis: If your bronchitis hasn't resolved after 10 days I recommend that you be examined by your physician to see whether a chest xray is advisable and I also would start a course of antibiotics such as amoxicillin or augmentin. If signs of asthmatic bronchitis are present, addition of an inhaler like advair would be helpful as asthmatic bronchitis can be protracted. I assume you're not smoking. Read more

How long does it take for this crackling in my lungs from bronchitis to go away. Feeling totally fine except I sound like a cat purring constantly.

How long does it take for this crackling in my lungs from bronchitis to go away. Feeling totally fine except I sound like a cat purring constantly.

Can take weeks: I am sorry to hear about the bronchitis. This excess phlegm is just the after effects of the inflammatory process and can take a couple (sometime 3-4 weeks) weeks to resolve. You could try guaifenesin 300 mg by mouth and you can take this every 4 hours if needed. This will help break up the mucus/phlegm. Just make sure you are not pregnant while taking this. Guaifenesin is also called Mucinex Read more

Lost my voice due to bronchitis. What can I do to be ably to sound normal again? I sound like a 90 year old man.

Don't talk: I once had this and a very helpful pharmacist expanded on the good advice from my primary care physician. He'd told me to rest my voice as much as possible. Drink soothing tepid fluids, gargle w/ saline, etc. ADDED to that was: Don't whisper (it's even worse than talking) and don't even form words w/ mouth. The vocal cords play along and don't rest. They need a few days off. It worked! Write notes Read more

Can I give my 4mg methylprednisone for RA to my son 34 for bronchitis he cant afford his scripts he is going to choke it sounds so thick won't come up?

Bad idea: Sharing prescriptions is never a good idea. Steroids are a particularly bad idea because they can mask a lot of things, delaying diagnosis and resulting in more risk. Bronchitis doesn't get better with steroids unless someone has chronic lung disease. Bronchitis is almost always just a fancy name for a chest cold caused by a virus. The only thing that will really help is time. Best wishes. Read more

I have frequent wheezing and bronchitis, but pulmonary function testing is always normal. Does that sound like asthma despite normal testing? :

Not all wheezes are: Due to asthma. Do you wheeze when you breathe in or when you breathe out? If only when breathing in then one need to look for an obstruction at the upper airways and not asthma (wheezing when breathing out). Consult an ENT to rule out vocal cord dysfunction. Read more

I have POTS and HR is 80s-110, depending. I get Bronchitis and am wondering if Albuterol type inhalers are safe for me when I get wheezing sound?

In terms of safety: There should not be any significant difference in a patient with POTS or a normal individual. Albuterol inhalers are associated with an increase in heart rate but if you are well hydrated and not standing when you use them this will not exacerbate your POTS. Read more

It may be: Worth a second Prednisone taper (many Prescribers indicate one refill on their Prescriptions since a second "Pulse" is often required in the treatment of asthmatic bronchitis>

Hope this is helpful

My husband was diagnosed with bronchitis last week. Was given a zpac and meds for a cough. He seems to b getting worse again. Any advice?

See the doctor: If the symptoms are getting worse and he has been on the antibiotic for at least a week, he may have an infection that is resistant to that antibiotic. The other possibility is that he has a viral infection and did not need an antibiotic in the first place either way, he should followup with his physician to determine if he needs a different treatment. Cough persists: Even after killing the germs associated with your infection you will have some disturbance in the mucous flow in your lungs. This could last a month. Persistence of a cough that gradually improves is expected. Read more
