What do I do if the baby I sit for clings to me when mom comes home?

What do I do if the baby I sit for clings to me when mom comes home?

It's normal.: When this happens with my kids, the usually sitter gives a quick hug to our baby, and then hands him over without any fanfare or long goodbyes or drama. Very businesslike. If you and his mom put on a dramatic show, the kid thinks it's a dramatic event. And even if he does cry, it's normal - he's obviously formed an attachment to you, which means you're doing a great job! ...Read more

What do you suggest if my sister is trying to do sit ups while pregnant can that harm the baby?

What do you suggest if my sister is trying to do sit ups while pregnant can that harm the baby?

Good for her!: It is always encouraging to have graduated exercise programs for pregnant ,mom's as it can shorten and ease eventual labor. The rising uterus after the first trimester will minimize your sister's ability to do sit ups very soon. There are other types of exercises that will not compromise her or her fetus' wellbeing that involve cardio and stretching. The fetus is enclosed in a cushioned water sac. ...Read more

Hi docs, do you think it's bad to just lay down all day while pregnant? How often should the mom get some exercise?

Better to exercise: Laying down all day is almost never a good idea for anybody. Blood clots, pneumonia, and muscle deconditioning, for example, can all result from relative immobility. I would recommend at least maintenance of your normal daily activity levels, and up to 30-60 minutes of daily exercise would be fine. Of course, see your OB if you have any problems or concerns. ...Read more

My baby's almost a week old, when can I take him outside? And when can I leave the house to do things?

My baby's almost a week old, when can I take him outside? And when can I leave the house to do things?

No official time...: The american academy of pediatrics has no specific age cutoff before going in public. Airlines need a docs permission if newborn flying is less than 1 week. It's really up to you. The newborn's immune system isn't completely developed yet, so viruses and bacteria can be more harmful. Use common sense, and lots of hand washing. Make sure close contacts have their whooping cough booster (tdap). ...Read more

What do I do if my baby is still waking in the night to feed?

What do I do if my baby is still waking in the night to feed?

Reset the clock: After the newborn period babies can slip into the habit of becoming trained nighttime feeders. One of the ways to interrupt that pattern is to offer a small amount of water to older babies. That will quench their thirst but not perpetuate the habit of eating at night. Some babies will become upset so be prepared the first several nights to "go through withdrawals" as you reset the hunger time clock. ...Read more

What can I do for my baby to not become a cry baby?

What can I do for my baby to not become a cry baby?

Accept and nurture: Babies cry to get basic needs met early & later cry in tantrums & responding to negative events.Nurturing does not create a cry baby. The kid who stubs his toe will cry loud & briefly, settle & return to play. The parent who tells him to stop crying invalidates his decision that it hurt & degrades his self worth.Try to strike a balance accepting the valid cry & rejecting the self indulgent whining. ...Read more

Getting induced, when should I get my epidural so that it doesn't wear off when I start to push? About how many cms? Or if I can't handle the pain?

Getting induced, when should I get my epidural so that it doesn't wear off when I start to push? About how many cms? Or if I can't handle the pain?

Depends: Usually it is recommended to wait until you are close to half dilation 4-6 cm before starting epidural if you can handle the pain or discomfort. The reason is doing it too early can slow the process naturally but if you are being induced you might want to do it earlier like 4 cm perhaps. It really depends on your pain tolerance and threshold. That being said if your in pain earlier may be better. ...Read more

My three year old is not listening, throwing tantrums, how do I get her to listen. I don't want to spank, i feel bad when i yell or put in corner?

Use time-out: Time-out is a safe, effective way to ignore behaviors, which makes them go away.1-2-3 magic & " little people" teach you how to do "walk, don't talk" time-out effectively. Behaviors get worse before they go away, as a test to see if she can get you to engage. Crying does no psychological harm. Praise her often for behaviors you want. Yelling/spanking both reinforce behaviors & teach aggression. ...Read more
