What Do Glycosuria And Ketone Bodies In The Urine Indicate
Together is serious: Glycosuria means sugar in the urine. It happens when the sugar level in the blood is high >180 mg/dl. It is reported in crosses (+, ++, +++, ++++) the higher the crosses the worst the sugar in blood. Ketones appear in urine and blood when the liver is burning fat like in the state of fasting, or when diabetes is complicated with ketoacidosis ( is a serious complication of type i diabetes). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Urine is the product of the kidneys, which is produced to eliminate the waste products of metabolism, manage body fluid balance, &maintain acid-base balance. The blood is first filtered by the kidneys, and the composition of the resulting fluid is then altered depending on the body's needs. It is composed of mostly water, and breakdown products from blood cells impart ...Read more
Can you tell me different chemical methods for the detection of sugar, protein, blood and ketone bodies in the urine.?
Not diabetes?: Diabetes is most likely and needs full evaluation including before meal and 2 hr after meal glucose testing. There could be Insulin resistance with am fasting hyperglycemia even with a1c < 6.5. Prolonged fast can cause ketones to spill into urine. Large carbohydrate load with blood gluocse after above 180 mg/dl coincident with a urine check could potentially cause positive urine glucos. ...Read more
For what reasons in some patient we found that ketone bodies in urine are positive while glucose nil?

Why is phenylketonuria not called phenylalanemia instead? Is it related to ketone bodies in any way?
Tradition: The original testing involved the detection of phenyl ketones in the urine, which are still part of the disease.Simple chemical reagents could permit detection in a simple office setting, rather than a specialized lab.A urine screening done on a kid with unexplained developmental delay, blond hair and seizures would lead to blood testing for PKU.There was a time before modern screening. ...Read more
Ketoacidosis: Ketones like few other substances can cause acidosis in the bloodstream which is a low ph and very dangerous to every organ system. Probably you have heard about this due to someone with very elevated blood sugar which causes the production of ketones. The details are very complicated to explain but basically know that this can be treated. Iv fluids and meds to treat the cause bring ph to normal. ...Read more
Lack of carbs: Glucose is the normal fuel for the body. If there is inadequate glucose (derived from the breakdown of carbohydrate) or if in the case of diabetes the glucose can't get into the cell due to Insulin lack/dysfunction the body will then burn fat and/or protein to make glucose. This results in the build up of ketones. ...Read more
Urine analysis: Your leukocytes can indicate a urinary tract infection (uti), your ketones, with no glucose, indicate that you are not ingesting carbohydrates and your protein could indicate the presence of a UTI or proteinuria. Get your physician culture your urine, if it has leucocytes and if it is positive, get start on antibiotics. If you have no uti, get a 24 hour urine for protein to quantify it in it. ...Read more
Abnormal urine: Ketones (k) in the urine can be seen in a diabetics who need Insulin to control their glucose levels are denied it, something called diabetic ketoacidosis. K can also be seen in non-diabetics who are not eating carbohydrates, and shows they are using its fat stores for energy. Proteinuria comes from glomerular diseases of the kidney. Blood comes from uti's or problems in the urinary tract. ...Read more
Starvation: Ketones are normally the end result of fat metabolism in an enviroment where carbohydrates are either missing or due to lack of insulin, unavailable . Common situations are diabetic ketosis and starvation. Alternatively ingestion of some poisonous alcohols (i.e. Isopropyl) will result in ketonuria. ...Read more
