What Do Ca 125 Levels Mean
Hi, I'm 48 yo, have endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, pre-menopausal. CA 125 was around 200's then 159 the last one was 210 any concerns?
Likely, no: CA 125 is not recommended as a screening tool for ovarian cancer when used in risk-based stratification. Meaning, assuming that your mom or sister didn't get diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Normal for women with endometriosis to have elevated CA-125. Ca-125 (cancer antigen 125 or carbohydrate antigen 125) is a biomarker/tumor marker for ovarian cancer (etc); however, it is not sensitive or specific enough to use as a screening test. CA-125: This marker is elevated significantly at this value. It's greatest specificity for ovarian cancer is in post-menopausal women, but a variety of things that irritate the lining of the abdomen and even chest, can elevate it mildly. Yes and No: Ca-125 is a test for follow-up after diagnosis and with the treatment of ovarian cancer. It is elevated in many other diseases.The test should not be used for a fishing expedition because it would be misleading and concerning for a patient like you. None to minimal: If the ca-125 was going to be used simply as another blood test for example in a yearly physical, you should not be terribly concerned at all. My answer is different however, if you have a history of a disease such as ovarian cancer and that it should be checked. Not sure: Ca 125 is used to follow response of ovarian cancer to treatment, it is not considered a good screening test for the general population (too many false positives) but is used to screen patients that cary a deleterious brca mutation.
