What Diet Should I Have With Low Iron Saturation Levels
Healthy diet: Sources of iron - egg yolk, molasses, raisin bran, raisins, prunes, dried apricots, figs, kidney beans, pinto beans, navy beans, lentils, split green peas, enriched cereals, enriched macaroni, spinach, greens, broccoli, lima beans, avocado. Cook in a cast iron pan. The following foods can help your body absorb iron better: orange, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit, broccoli, brussels sprouts. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
refers to all the physical matter humans (like all living creatures) must take in on a recurring basis; only partially for energy. Like all life on planet humans are open systems which keep tearing down their structure & require intake of atoms/molecules from which to rebuild their structure. Intestinal lining cells replaced ~every 3 days. CaPO4 in bones ~every 6 years, ...Read more
Normal: You can be low on iron but still have a normal hemoglobin. The iron level is not the best test of iron reserves. Ferritin is a better test. The gold standard is bone marrow biopsy. Not necessary here. Treating low (hypo) ferritinemia does not improve symptoms -- http://www.Biomedcentral.Com/1741-7015/10/8. ...Read more
Matter of time: Low iron saturations could indicate the beginning of iron deficiency. However, the body stores quite a bit of iron in the form of ferritin, and it's not until the stores become depleted that the bone marrow starts to become unable to produce red blood cells like it's supposed to. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I have a low ferritin and normal hemoglobin. Also i have gastritis and can't take iron. How can i raise ferritin level?
Various: Iron deficiency is only one of many factors that can cause anemia ( low level of hemoglobin/hematocrit). Deficiency in other nutrient like vit b12, folate, (folic acid) or anemia due to other chronic inflammation/disease, destruction of the red blood cells, drug induced, bone marrow failure, bleeding, other red blood cell disorders etc can cause anemia as well. See you doctor and have further evaluation. ...Read more

Ferritine too high but iron and transferrine saturation normal
doctor suggest healthy diet without red meat etc and skip vitamin pil with iron?
Iron level: 16.1 umol/l and ferritin level 143.5 ng/ml. What does that mean & what should I do. Dr suggests to stop taking multivitamin with iron.
Why would you?: There is not much evidence-based support for the use of L-arginine as a supplement. It has been subjected to some small clinical trials, and would likely have some biological activity, but at this point I do not see strong evidence for its routine use in human healthcare. Most diets are plenty rich in l-arginine, and the safety of taking this supplement over the long-term has not been established ...Read more
What would cause iron & iron sat to be too high but ferritin to be low? Should I discontinue iron supplements? I experience fatigue, hair loss. Thanks
Iron deficiency: Ferritin is an indicator of long term storage fo iron and the TIBC is the chemical in the blood that binds and transports iron. TIBC usually increases when total body iron stores are low but can also increase with hormone supplements or pregnancy. Iron supplements are recommended and are available OTC. They may color BM's black and cause some constipation, so stool softeners are helpful. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

What might cause high B12 levels? I also had low iron (long-standing anemia) and low vitamin D. CBC was normal except mildly low hemoglobin.
B12 normal range: There is no harm in an elevated B12 level. The normal range is established based on a population study, but the physiology and diet factors that might lead to higher levels than those in the population study are not significant. Don't worry about it in the least. Get follow-up to see that the hemoglobin comes back to normal though. ...Read more
Do i need iron supplements if I have a blood ferritin level of 11.2? My regular iron levels are within range, but I'm often dizzy and sleepy.
I have had an iron infusion of iron polymaltose as i had iron deficiency anemia with ferritin level 9. How long before my ferritin level will rise?
What kind of anemia would I have if my hct and RBC are low, but my hgb and ferritin levels are normal?
Not anemic : We rather go by haemoglobin than hamatocrit. So if your haemoglobin is normal and ferritin is normal you are not anemic as hct and rbc count are probably relative indices than the former two giving better estimation of anemia. Also you have to check your B12 and folate (folic acid) levels in addition to iron studies to complete the work up for anemia though the hb if normal , you are not anemic. ...Read more
