Diet (Definition)

refers to all the physical matter humans (like all living creatures) must take in on a recurring basis; only partially for energy. Like all life on planet humans are open systems which keep tearing down their structure & require intake of atoms/molecules from which to rebuild their structure. Intestinal lining cells replaced ~every 3 days. CaPO4 in bones ~every 6 years, ...Read more

Why do I have low iron levels but a healthy haemoglobin level?

Why do I have low iron levels but a healthy haemoglobin level?

Normal: You can be low on iron but still have a normal hemoglobin. The iron level is not the best test of iron reserves. Ferritin is a better test. The gold standard is bone marrow biopsy. Not necessary here. Treating low (hypo) ferritinemia does not improve symptoms -- http://www.Biomedcentral.Com/1741-7015/10/8. ...Read more

How can I not be anemic and have low iron saturation levels?

How can I not be anemic and have low iron saturation levels?

Matter of time: Low iron saturations could indicate the beginning of iron deficiency. However, the body stores quite a bit of iron in the form of ferritin, and it's not until the stores become depleted that the bone marrow starts to become unable to produce red blood cells like it's supposed to. ...Read more

Intravenous iron: Iron can be administered intravenously and sufficient amount can be given in one sitting to correct any iron deficiency. You would need to consult your doctor for the need and advisability of this treatment. ...Read more

I have low hemoglobin/hematocrit but my iron levels are ok. Why?

I have low hemoglobin/hematocrit but my iron levels are ok. Why?

Various: Iron deficiency is only one of many factors that can cause anemia ( low level of hemoglobin/hematocrit). Deficiency in other nutrient like vit b12, folate, (folic acid) or anemia due to other chronic inflammation/disease, destruction of the red blood cells, drug induced, bone marrow failure, bleeding, other red blood cell disorders etc can cause anemia as well. See you doctor and have further evaluation. ...Read more

Can I supplement with L-arginine even if I have low blood pressure, and low glucose levels?

Can I supplement with L-arginine even if I have low blood pressure, and low glucose levels?

Why would you?: There is not much evidence-based support for the use of L-arginine as a supplement. It has been subjected to some small clinical trials, and would likely have some biological activity, but at this point I do not see strong evidence for its routine use in human healthcare. Most diets are plenty rich in l-arginine, and the safety of taking this supplement over the long-term has not been established ...Read more

My labs were Iron:197 with high TIbC and low ferritin levels what does this mean?

My labs were Iron:197 with high TIbC and low ferritin levels what does this mean?

Iron deficiency: Ferritin is an indicator of long term storage fo iron and the TIBC is the chemical in the blood that binds and transports iron. TIBC usually increases when total body iron stores are low but can also increase with hormone supplements or pregnancy. Iron supplements are recommended and are available OTC. They may color BM's black and cause some constipation, so stool softeners are helpful. ...Read more

What might cause high B12 levels? I also had low iron (long-standing anemia) and low vitamin D. CBC was normal except mildly low hemoglobin.

What might cause high B12 levels? I also had low iron (long-standing anemia) and low vitamin D. CBC was normal except mildly low hemoglobin.

B12 normal range: There is no harm in an elevated B12 level. The normal range is established based on a population study, but the physiology and diet factors that might lead to higher levels than those in the population study are not significant. Don't worry about it in the least. Get follow-up to see that the hemoglobin comes back to normal though. ...Read more

What kind of anemia would I have if my hct and RBC are low, but my hgb and ferritin levels are normal?

What kind of anemia would I have if my hct and RBC are low, but my hgb and ferritin levels are normal?

Not anemic : We rather go by haemoglobin than hamatocrit. So if your haemoglobin is normal and ferritin is normal you are not anemic as hct and rbc count are probably relative indices than the former two giving better estimation of anemia. Also you have to check your B12 and folate (folic acid) levels in addition to iron studies to complete the work up for anemia though the hb if normal , you are not anemic. ...Read more
