What Cough Syrup Can You Take When Pregnant
I am 4w+5d pregnant but I have sever cold and am coughing also. What can I do to help relieve this and can I take any cough syrup at all.
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Mucinex (guaifenesin): Mucinex or robitussin (aka guaifenisin) are safe in pregnancy, as is dextromethorphan. Avoid sudafed. Tylenol, (acetaminophen) throat lozenges, saile nasal spray are also safe. If you start having fevers, the cough persists, or feel that you are getting worse, please go see your doctor. Pregnant women are at a higher risk of complications from 'colds' that everyone else recovers from. Remember to stay hydrated. ...Read more

We simply don't know: While I am inclined to say it is probably ok, we do not have enough information and no formal studies to say one way or another. Demonstrating safety or hazard is much more difficult than you may realize. That is why we always err on the side of caution during pregnancy and take things only when clearly indicated and of proven benefit. ...Read more

I am 31 weeks pregnant. I took a cough syrup that contains ivy leaf. Since I took it the top of my stomach has been cramping 6 hours now. Is this ok?
Unsure: While this could be a form of GI upset, you can't make that assumption. Please call the doctor or midwife who is delivering you and alert them of the pain now. Based on your description, I can't rule out preterm labor or contractions. By the way most cough drops and plain Robitussin (guaifenesin) area probably the safest for a cough during pregnancy. ...Read more

What can cold medicine do to the baby in the first trimester? So, for about two weeks my friend has been taking cold medicine and cough medicine regularly on the doctors order. Thing is, she didn't know she was pregnant until, well now. She figures that
It depends on what cough and cold medicines she took. The good news - many cough and cold medicines are considered relatively safe to take during pregnancy. Since there are many many brands out there, i'll list the generic names of the active ingredients. If she took a medication with:
- cough drops
- vick's vapo-rub
then you can stop worrying. These are considered relatively safe during pregnancy.
The two things that are not considered safe during pregnancy are cold remedies that contain alcohol and ones that contain Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine since both of these can effect blood flow to the placenta.
If she has concerns about her pregnancy, she should contact her doctor to discuss. Good luck! ...Read more
Depends the amount:
Usually one drink takes 1-2 hour to disappear. Therefore it should be ok after 4 hours with 2 drinks.
However, there all kinds of cough syrups. Some have tylenol (acetaminophen) and both tylenol (acetaminophen) and alcohol may cause bad liver trouble.
Obviously, it also depends the amount of cough syrup and the presence of any (undetected) liver disease. ...Read more
Yes: If you have taken melatonin in the past with good results, it is ok to take it along with a prescription cough syrup. Just be aware that there can be additive effects of taking both together, ie you may be more sedated than usual, or even feel groggy when you wake up in the morning. Use a low dose of melatonin, eg. 5-1 mg and increase by. 5mg nightly if needed. ...Read more
No: For severe cough, we may prescribe Robitussin (guaifenesin) w/ codeine. It will help w/ cough suppression, illness pain, and insomnia. For people who do not tolerate codeine, vicotussin can be used; but that has hydro-codone, which you say you're sensitive to. That pretty much rules out the narcotics for cough suppression. You could use tessalon for great cough control, but without the sedation nor pain control. ...Read more
Be careful: Both Codeine and melatonin have sedative effects, and the two together may cause significant sedation. If you are taking other meds, there may be further interactions. If you have respiratory problems, the combo may exacerbate those problems. You may also feel groggy in the morning; so be careful with machinery or driving. I'd advise using one or the other, not both. ...Read more
