What Causes Tsh To Drop
What could cause a TSH to drop from 25 to 3.1 in less than 2 weeks. Doctors retested after worsening symptoms. Can TSH levels fluctuate that much?
Yes: Peptide hormones like TSH have short half lives measured in minutes. Adequate treatment with replacement thyroxine would cause TSH to drop rapidly.
Ihad thyroidectomy last year becauseof hurtheladenoma. After surgy my weight was64 I in eltroxen200 my weight is drop to 60now what cause it? Tsh is.03
Please see doctor: Weight loss and low TSH suggest increased thyroid activity and you should see your doctor for an evaluation. Additional lab tests may be needed.
My TSH levels recently came back out of range. I've had rapid weight gain. Will the adjustment in medication cause the weight to drop off?
Yes: Recommend to go back and follow up with your doctor to get adjustment with dosage, inturn it will help your wt as well.
Any thoughts as to what would cause a sudden drop in TSH in the last trimester? I'm 32 weeks pregnant with twins.
Fluctuations: In thyroid function are common in pregnancy. I do not know what you mean by a "drop" in tsh, as you give no values. Check w/your doctor or an endocrinologist and they can certainly help you.
UNCLEAR ETIOLOGY: Typically, once the TSH starts trending up, it means your own thyroid gland is not being capable of producing enough thyroid hormone and until treated with appropriate doses of hormone, it will continue to go up. The answer to your question depends on the time in between labs, weight gain or significant weight loss, etc etc. Any other symptoms?
Over 99% of the tine the cause is hypothyroidism, which itself has many causes, as mentioned by Dr. Kaur.
I advise everyone with hypothyroidism to ask their doctor to test them for thyroiditis, as most will have this and treatment is a bit different from plain hypothyroidism.
Another cause can be a pituitary gland tumor. Most pituitary tumors are benign.
Hyperthyroidism: Hi. Assuming you're not taking thyroid hormone (s), a suppressed TSH means you're hyperthyroid. That means your thyroid gland is autonomously overproducing thyroid hormone and not under normal control of the pituitary gland. The doctor who checked that will refer you to an endocrinologist for evaluation and treatment. You'll do fine. Good luck!See 1 more doctor answer
Error in testing: It is possible that one of the test results is in error. It would be prudent to discuss it with the doctor who ordered the tests.
Would wt. Loss of 20lbs cause TSH to change from 1.34 to 2.52 in 2 months? Want to loose 20 more. Will it keep fluctuating? My Dr. Knows.125mcg@ 6day
Maybe..: A lot of things can cause the TSH to fluctuate such as stress...maybe the weight loss is causing a physical stress changing the TSH. Main thing is that it's still in normal range which is good. Continue to live a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and losing weight if needed to reach a healthy BMI 19-25... Follow your TSH with your doctor regularly. Take your Levo on an empty stomach.
Not much: Any lab can have a temporary problems doing any test accurately. That is why an abnormal level should always be repeated to verify it. There are temporary causes for high TSH (resolving subacute thyroiditis), so that a 2nd TSH level done a few weeks after an abnormal one, could be normal. Subclinical hypothyroidism will have a high TSH with other thyroid levels normal, no symptoms.
Both are low?: If both TSH (from the pituitary gland in the brain) and free T4 are low, it may be that the pituitary gland is not secreting enough TSH to stimulate the thyroid gland to make more t4. Then endocrinologist can do additional tests to see if this is indeed the case.
Thyroid inflammation: Can cause variable TSH results. Tsh tests are very sensitive but often not real reproducible. Levels vary by time of day. Tsh is secreted in spurts and may vary depending upon when it's drawn. Plus some labs are better and more reliable than others.
Prob normal: The Tsh fluctuates within the normal range all the time. Sometimes thyroid inflammation leads to abnormal fluctuations which usually resolve on their own. As long as the tsh is fluctuating within the norml range that is normal. If it REMAINS out of range then that is abnormal.
Probably normal: Hi. TSH varies within the normal range, and TSH assay has limits in accuracy and precision. So that change is most likely perfectly normal. Possible but much less likely is that thyroid gland function is changing and TSH level is changing to reflect that. I'd go with normal. Good luck!
2 things: Hi. Either your thyroid has stone-cold normal function or you're on the right dose of thyroid medication. And for the record, there is no free T4 assay I know of where the upper end of normal is 1.55. Good luck!
I take 200mcg levothoroxine. My TSH came back &level was 0.12 and dr is lowering my does to 175. Usually my TSH drops they higher dose. I'm confused?
See below: TSH levels rise when thyroid does not make enough thyroxine or the drug dose is lower than needed. At higher than needed dose of thyroxine, TSH levels becomes low. See this site for more info. Http://www. Nlm. Nih. Gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003684.htm
