What Causes Nail Biting In Adults
Can excessive nail biting for 30 years cause damage to the nail growth. I seem to have more nail width over lenght. Could nail pattern been altered?
Doubtful: That nail biting would cause an alteration in the nail growth pattern, unless you were getting chronic nail infections from your actions.
Common or concerning: The exact causes of nail biting or skin picking are unknown. While these are very common nervous habits, chronic nail biting or skin picking can be a cause for concern, and if unwanted, cause frequent bleeding/lesious, and cause serious distress, could signal a psychological disorder.
Onychophagia: Treating the underlying anxiety - or possibly bipolar disorder - can go a long way in helping. For those with generalized anxiety disorder, Buspirone can be very effective. If hypomania, mood stabilization may assist. Cognitive behavior therapies would emphasize alternative means of anxiety relief including relaxation protocols, distress tolerance strategies, and exposure. Rub a worry stone?
Notice it: Often if you can notice that it is happening, you can stop these kinds of habits. However, some will paint their nails with jalapeno juice or some other vile taste to help remind you not to. The other thing you try is to carry nail clippers or files with you, as often it is the desire to clear a hangnail that starts it.
Not necessarily: Sometimes people get into the habit of nail biting and it becomes hard to break. Some people bite their nails to shorten them. Some people are stress nail biters & some bite compulsively to the point of self-harm.

Relax: Nobody has any definitive answer to cause or cure of this. It may be a type of compulsive behavior so possibly OCD therapies can be considered. Some people put bad-tasting agents or thick lacquer on their nails. Clip your nails very short. Do not waste much emotional energy on this. Lots of people bite their finger nails and even toenails. They stop when they lose their teeth or without knowing.
