What would cause low Creatinine and Lipase levels in my son's bloodwork? He is 9 and has chronic abdominal pains for over a year.
Low creatinine: Can come from a lack or low levels of muscle mass. Most young children can have this phenomenon without real disease. Low lipase levels are usually more complicated as it depends on the condition in which blood was taken. Lipase is a digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas. Low levels of lipase can indicate cystic fibrosis, where the pancreas is permanently damaged, or chronic pancreatitis. ...Read more
My blood work shows creatinine level quite low-.39. Since Sept, extremely weak in my muscles/fatigue easily/must rest often. What would cause this?
Many things: The low creatinine suggests that you have low muscle mass. It isn't clear if this is based on your being small or due to a concerning problem. Many things can cause this like a primary muscle problem, metabolic issues, hormonal issues, nutritional deficiency and low grade infections. You will be best served by reviewing your issues with a physician to better create a course of action. ...Read more

Anemia in a 70'er: The 70 year old person likely has chronic kidney disease (CKD), despite having a normal level creatinine. How high?: When I was lifting weights every day, my creatinine was usually 1.7 mg/dl, and elite bodybuilders have up to 2.0 or so. This is perfectly healthy. Simply being dehydrated or popping a little too much Motrin can up the creatinine enough to get noticed, or serious kidney disease can be the cause. Don't treat a lab value -- your physician can determine the big picture. ...Read more

I have a high bun/ creatinine level (28) and a low creatinine level (0.5). Should I be concerned or do something?
BUN/Creat Ratio: I personally would not worry about it since the high ratio is due to a slightly elevated BUN. This might be due to a diet high in non-essential amino acids (nothing to truly be concerned about) or a mild lack of water intake. If you are still concerned, please see your primary doctor and go over all of that with her/him. ...Read more
My 2 year old had labwork yesterday and her creatinine level was 0.26 with a listed standard range of 0.30 to 0.70. Is this a cause for concern?
No: Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. That's so as not to miss stuff. Kids tend to run low in any case. ...Read more

What does it mean if your creatinine level is too high 1.16 and your bun/creatinine ratio is very low at a 5?
Why do you ask?: Labs mean nothing in the absence of a clinical history. You might be a vegan bodybuilder. When I was lifting weights every day, my creatinine ran 1.6-1.8. The fellow-pathologists with whom I've discussed it think that reports generated by labs are causing overdiagnosis of renal disease (it's subscience -- "there's an adjustment for race because black people are more muscular.") ...Read more
Would losing 12 pounds on an already petite woman and dramatically decreasing protein cause BUN creatinine level to drop from 15 to 6 in 3 months?
Loss of muscle mass:
In addition to losing fat, you are losing muscle mass and that is reflected in the drop in creatinine. You may wish to increase your protein intake and exercise.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Drink enough water daily so that your urine is mostly colorless.
Practice safe sex. ...Read more
