What causes low amniotic fluid levels?

What causes low amniotic fluid levels?

Circulation issues: The amniotic fluid 'circulates' inside the uterus after it is manufactured including the baby swallowing some of it. If there are genetic problems with the fetus or problems in 'manufacturing' both can cause low levels. ...Read more

Could low amniotic fluid in utero cause problems for the baby after delivery?

Could low amniotic fluid in utero cause problems for the baby after delivery?

Depends on cause: Babies don't need kidneys much during pregnancy because the placenta does that job. They do make pee that ends up as amniotic fluid. The right amount of fluid creates extra volume in the womb that pushes back against the muscular womb & allows the lungs to develop. (important) Things that stop or limit fluid formation includes absent kidneys or blockage in the outflow. Such defects can be a problem ...Read more

Male fetus ultrasound (35w 4d) which showed an enlarged fetal bladder. Normal amniotic fluid and kidneys. Is this typical in third trimester?

Specific case: This is a very specific case that requires a doctor to evaluate the exact findings of the sonogram to determine if it is normal or not. You will need to seek clarification from your doctor regarding the term “enlarged bladder” to determine if further testing, follow up sonograms or a referral to a perinatologist is indicated. ...Read more

In an ultrasonogram had slightly low amniotic fluid. What is cure?

No specific cure: Oligohydramnios occurs infrequently in pregancy and there is no specific cure. Sometimes the amniotic fluid volume will increase with increased fluid intake (increased hydration). However the cause of the low fluid volume is the important factor and the specific management will depend on that diagnosis. ...Read more

Low amniotic fluid at 39 weeks. Should they deliver?

Low amniotic fluid at 39 weeks. Should they deliver?

Probably: If your afi is < 5, yes. If it's borderline, between 5-8, it should be strongly considered unless your cervix is unfavorable (difficult to induce d/t being closed, thick, and/or firm). If they wait, you also need a normal non-stress test (nst) or biophysical profile (bpp). If your afi > 8, it's ok to wait. Discuss this with your OB & make sure you understand "kick counts" & when to go to l&d. ...Read more

What's effective for helping to prevent low amniotic fluid?

Low amniotic fluid: Amniotic fluid levels are a indicator of good fetal health. Sometimes low fluid can just be representative of poor maternal hydration. Other times low fluid (oligohydramnios) can represent an adverse intrauterine enviorment due to many medical problems like hypertension or preeclampsia. Certain fetal and placental issues can also cause low fluid. Diagnosis and treatment can increase fluid. ...Read more

How can I tell if my baby has low amniotic fluid? The ultrasound looks like it doesn't have any fluid for it. It almost looks like it's squished in th

You don't: You cannot look at an ultrasound and read it. It takes training/experience. There is also a difference in expected fluid to baby ratio at different points during the pregnancy. It tends to be higher around 12 weeks and decline as they fill out. ...Read more

When I had an ultrasound I was told I had low amniotic fluid, could this lead to a c- section?

Possibly but u need: To discuss this at length with your OB because u will need increased frequency of ultrasound because if the fluid becomes too low or the baby is not growing properly you will need early delivery by csection but this will be determined by your OB and I am sure your OB will be having u seeing a perinatologist also. ...Read more

What symptoms of low amniotic fluid are the most important?

What symptoms of low amniotic fluid are the most important?

Oligohydramnios: Low amniotic fluid or oligohydramnios is a condition brought about by a decreased production of urine by the fetus either through a decreased placental perfusion or blocked urinary outlet, to name a few. It could also result from a ruptured amniotic membrane. One of the first signs of low fluid is a size-date discepancy of the growing uterus. An ultrasound will help to diagnose the condition. ...Read more

Is there a relation between have thick blood and low amniotic fluid? Why no one answer?

Is there a relation between have thick blood and low amniotic fluid? Why no one answer?

No: Nobody's answering because everybody's trying to think of a possible connection and can't. "Thick blood" usually refers to some genetic stuff that makes it clot more readily. Oligohydramnios has a variety of causes and is also fairly common. You need to insist on a real diagnosis and explanation for both. Best wishes. ...Read more

I am suffering from low amniotic fluid (38 weeks). Will I be allowed to go over my due late?

I am suffering from low amniotic fluid (38 weeks). Will I be allowed to go over my due late?

NOT IF you were: My pt! Ask your OB! The standard of care is if you have oligihydramnios to not go past your due and your afi needs to be followed closely because if it gets down to 5.0 or lower u need to be delivered without delay, if it is between 5-10 u need to be watched closely, the farther u go the more chance for a cord problem like strangulation or other problems due to the low fluid. ...Read more

Hi I am currently 20weeks and 5days I was diagnosed last week with low amniotic fluid of 1.8mm and told to terminate but I refuse. I am now bleeding?

Before viability: Is your low amniotic fluid volume from premature rupture of membranes? Does the fetus have kidneys? Bleeding could be sign of impending late abortion or an abruption. Are you contracting? I would have your cervix evaluated. ...Read more

Fetal lung fluid & urine make amniotic fluid, right? So what caused oligohydramnios?

Fetal lung fluid & urine make amniotic fluid, right? So what caused oligohydramnios?

Decreased perfusion: Oligo can be either loss of fluid or decreased production. A stressed infant will shunt oxygenated blood to more vital organs, less renal perfusion, therefore less urine produced. Anything that decreases placental perfusion can cause it (abruption or placental separation, poor implantation, vascular problems, clots, uterine abnls, etc). There are too many causes to list here, ask your ob. ...Read more

Oligohydramnios: 1st half of pregnancy- cause birth defects, miscarriage or still birth
2 nd half of pregnancy - intrauterine growth retardation, cord compression, meconium stained fluid and may need C section

What does dilated fetal kidneys with normal amniotic fluid mean for a second trimester fetus?

What does dilated fetal kidneys with normal amniotic fluid mean for a second trimester fetus?

No big deal.: Detecting renal problems by fetal ultrasound is very accurate and efficient because it can prevent serious complications postnatally. Fetal renal pyelectasis or even hydronephrosis is nothing to worry about, provided the amniotic fluid is monitored and remains normal. The neonatology team should be notified at birth to institute appropriate follow-up for the newborn; monthly ultrasounds are needed. ...Read more

What are the risk and outcomes of low amniotic fluid in the first trimester? (17weeks pregnant)

Poor lung developmnt: The fluid is what the fetus "breathes" and helps the lungs develop normally. Severely decreased amniotic fluid can prevent the lungs from growing, developing, and being able to support the breathing needs of a newborn.
