What Causes External Carotid Stenoses
Possible: It is possible to develop a stroke during carotid stent placement (~ 4% in optimal patients). However the carotid stent is effective at preventing further strokes and that is why they are placed. At this point carotid stents are reserved for patients who are at high risk for open carotid endarterectomy (surgery). ...Read more

I always check the character of my carotid pulse these past days the pulse has become less evident whilst the BP is still normal what could cause this?
Unnecessary worries!: In a 22 year old, there should be zero concern about carotid pulse. So I would advise you to quit looking for problems that are not there and are entirely unrealistic. You can only generate anxiety by doing what you are doing. If are worried about your health, you can get an annual physical exam...Although it is not medically indicated at your age. ...Read more
Rare: Without question, this complication can occur but is exceedingly rare. It's important to have such studies at a center with extensive experience in ultrasound technique. ...Read more
Sometimes...: A dilated or aneursymal carotid on ultrasound is simply what we call a "redundant" carotid, meaning it is long and wraps on itself, so it looks bigger on ultrasound. True enlarged carotid arteries should be evaluated by a vascular surgeon. ...Read more
Cause and treatment: I question if pain is actually coming from your carotid artery? If you have concerns that the pain stems from a vascular problem, you need to see your doctor. There're many things that can cause neck pain, and the underlying problem, which anxiety may be aggravating, needs to be identified to fit the cause to the treatment. If it is anxiety, and your neck is normal, treat that. Sleep, exercise. ...Read more
Pain in Carotids: Inflammation in the carotid arteries may cause pain. More importantly, it is critical that you see a vascular surgeon to have your carotid arteries evaluated. You will need a carotid duplex to assess the amount of stenosis in the arteries, if any. Carotid artery blockage is one of the leading causes of strokes. Have this evaluated today. ...Read more
What could cause peak systolic velocity of right internal carotid artery to be elevated to 130cm/s but no elevation in left ica & no stenosis found?
Yes: It is not unusual to have headaches on the side of the stent soon after carotid stenting, especially if the carotid stenosis was high grade. These headaches usually resolve within days. Severe headache accompanied by hypertension in this setting can be worrisome and should be discussed with your doctor, as it can be a sign of reperfusion syndrome. ...Read more
Not a sign of plaque: 30% block in your carotid artery will not cause pain in your neck area. It is an indicator that it can compromise the blood flow to the brain if gets worse. One has to control the LDL levels in blood and bring it down with statins and diet.If it it prgresses to 60% or more, than you will need endarterectomy and reduce the chances of it leading to stroke. ...Read more
Carotid disease: If angiogram was "fine" then you must not have any. The best way is to get a piece of the blockage in the carotid and look at it under a microscope. Most common cause would be vascular damage (rust) from smoking, high blood pressure, high lipids or old trauma. Happy to do 2nd Opinion to help narrow this down in you. ...Read more
Turned my neck fast and far to the side. Neck now hurts. Could this tear carotid artery? Cause stroke?
Neck pain: Certainly this could be a concern, with possible carotid artery dissection. I would recommend a carotid duplex evaluation to evaluate the situation. ...Read more
Can tias over time be caused by temporary or partial occlusion of vertebral or carotid arteries and cause foci or lesions?
Yes: Tia's are short-lived, about 20-30- minutes and usually fully reverse. If not, it is a stroke with tissue damage, and then can be seen on an mri. The event heralds risk, and preventative treatment with an antiplatelet drug should be started. An embolism from say the heart or aorta, may need anti-coagulation. The greatest future risk of TIA is a stroke within one year. ...Read more

Is there anything that can cause pain to shoot trough the carotid artery in the neck to the head?
Nerve pain: Cannot imagine that pain goes through an artery, though nerves do travel in similar paths. Possibly a trapped nerve in your upper back is causing the shooting pain.
