Can dehydration cause a buildup of potassium in electrolyte blood tests without any other signs of kidney damage in tests?
Dehydration: If you become dehydrated enough the blood flow to the kidneys can decrease and kidney failure can occur. If the kidney failure is bad enough and if one is on certain medications such as potassium, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, spironolactone high potassium can occur. With dehydration the kidneys are not damaged and will recover with hydration. ...Read more
Gfr 57. Potassium 5.4. Creatinine 1.1. Medications ruled out. No known kidney disease. Hypertension controlled with mess. Can dehydration cause this?
Depends: It's hard to know with only a one-time reading. Your kidney function can fluctuate depending on your hydration status, how well controlled your blood pressure is (esp if it's too low for adequate renal perfusion) and if you're taking any medications that can affect gfr, ie nsaids, antibiotics like bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). You may have kidney disease if you have other creat that are similar. Talk to your pcp. ...Read more
A vague term: The exact term is dehydrated body. The term means a body that is low on water. The term is used loosely. To be accurate, the sodium level should increase. Regardless, what you have probably heard suggests that the body needs more water intake to avoid slowing down kidney work. ...Read more
In short, would you say that people who tend to get kidney stones throughout life, are people who go around dehydrated alot?
Yes and no: During the Vietnam war, the temperatures were very high, the water undrinkable, and about 10% of our soldiers passed a stone. Drinking plenty of water goes a long way to preventing most types of stones, but not everyone who passes low urine volumes will get a stone. So your idea is partly right -- I see you've had a stone & trust you'll keep your own urine clear. ...Read more
My blood chem panel all normal ex low sodium. Kidney prob. Feel very dehydrated. Is this possible?
Probably not: Dehydration usually raises sodium. If your sodium is only a bit outside the reference range, this isn't a cause for concern by itself -- ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. You list constipation as a problem -- do you drink plenty of water? If you find yourself urinating despite being thirsty, your physician can check your concentrating ability. ...Read more

I didn't drink water for two days. Could I be severe dehydrated? Could I get kidney failure? My urine wasn't real dark just yellow.
Yes: Yes you can get kidney failure from not drinking for a longtime. But right now I think you are just dehydrated. There is no way for me to ask you why you have not had water in 2 days but if you have decided not to, it is not a good idea and I hope you are taking other liquids. If you are not, and you just don, t feel like, get evaluated. Keep hydrated. ...Read more
If you found an elderly, but otherwise healthy woman dehydrated with swollen feet and kidneys starting to fail, what would you think first?
My sister in law's baby died in utero around 16w. No amniotic fluid but she didn't have leaking. They said fetus was dehydrated. How so? Kidney issue?
Could be: Amniotic fluid includes urine made by the fetus during pregnancy. Those that have poorly formed or no kidneys or a severe blockage to their urine outflow, will not create enough amniotic fluid. The fetus remains so tightly shrinked wrapped, that they also can have poor lung growth (no room). These can survive pregnancy but die soon after birth. A loss early in pregnancy may indicate another issue. ...Read more

What is best antibiotic to treat 4th ecoli UTI in 90 year old with slight kidney problem (elevated bun when dehydrated)? Is cipro (ciprofloxacin) ok?
Cipro (ciprofloxacin) is OK: Bacteria have to be sensitive to the antibiotic used or the medication will be ineffective. Cipro (ciprofloxacin) will be fine if the bacteria are sensitive to it, this can be checked by getting a culture and sensitivity test. Your 90 year old should also be hydrated. She hopefully is not retaining urine, or having an indwelling catheter, both of which would make UTI elimination very difficult. ...Read more

Sediment, Sandy looking in toilet bowl w/ urination. Happens occas. CBC, CMP nml 1 week ago. CT kidneys nml. Dehydrated? Don't drink a lot of water daily
Probably all is OK: "Sediment" in urine, or cloudy urine, almost never indicates a health problem. It is mainly caused by changes in diet and fluid intake that alter vaginal pH (acid-base balance). When pH is higher, phosphate crystals form. To test it, add a few drops of acid (e.g. vinegar) to cloudy urine. Usually it will instantly turn clear. No worries! ...Read more

After the food poisoning my lower back on my left side has been in pain a few times plus I think the reason my pee isn't clear is that I'm dehydrated?
Possibly: If dehydration is severe enough, the blood flow to the kidney decreases and the nutrition brought by the blood to the kidney cells can be too poor to keep kidney cells healthy. Most cases of dehydration do not reach this severity, and a return to a better hydration status can produce both a short term, recoverable loss or more involved kidney damage. ...Read more
