Bloody stools: Blood in stool is always problematic. While it is often an anal fissure, hemorrhoid or polyp in the intestines, you need to see a physician to determine what is causing intestinal bleeding. It can also be a sign of cancer or inflammatory bowel disease. You need an urgent physical exam by a physician to find the source of the bleeding.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding (Definition)

A long tube runs from the mouth to the anus. It includes, in order, the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileus), caecum, the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon (or large intestine) and the rectum. A lot of things: Many things can cause blood in the stool (i presume you talk about bright red blood and not black tarry stools) including simple things like hemorrhoids or fissures or more serious things like colitis, polyps, or even cancer. Get an examination: You need to get a medical check up to find the cause of the blood in your stool. The most common cause is hemorroids but the most serious reason could be cancer in the large bowel. Only a medical examination by your doctor can tell the difference between the two. So get a medical check up done soon.

46 yr old woman, blood in stool?

46 yr old woman, blood in stool?

See your doc: Maybe hemorrhoids, but 48 is close enough to 50 for "screening colonoscopy"- look for polyps-precancerous growths, in people with no symptoms (e.g. Bleeding, pain change in bowel habit), normal physical (no blood in stool, no lumps, tenderness), normal labs (no anemia). Colonoscopy to evaluate a symptom, e.g. Blood in stool is not screening. It is part of a diagnostic evaluation. Get colonoscopy.

Can palafer cause blood in stool?

No: Palafer usually refers to iron supplements. It can make your stool appear black and possibly look like bleeding but usually I would expect such a medication being used for people who have blood loss from other causes such as GI related diseases. Patient should see a local gastroenterologist if any signs of bleeding reported in the stool.

How common are polyps the cause of blood in stool in the 18-40 age group?

How common are polyps the cause of blood in stool in the 18-40 age group?

Not often, but....: In this young age group, benign causes, such as hemorrhoids are by far the most common cause of blood in bowel movements, however this is always a diagnosis of exclusion. Anyone with blood in the stool needs to be worked up, as cancers in the GI tract can occur at any age, and of course if there is a family history of colon cancer, especially at a young age, routine surveillance should be considered.

Had colonoscopy in 2002, was fine. Had one recently, microscopic blood in stool, can you get coloncancer within 10 yrs? 64 yr old female.

Absolutely...: There are several biologic pathways by which cells grow into cancer--this is particularly true with colon cancer. "interval colon cancers" are defined as presenting relatively soon after a negative colonoscopy exam. This phenomenon is well-defined & well-recognized in the medical literature, distinct from missed or regrowing lesions, & accepted as inevitable despite current screening strategies.
