What Causes Blood In Phlegm
Blood in phlegm: The most common origin of blood in phlegm is the nasal cavity including the sinuses. Dry, chaffed mucous membranes can bleed and this drips down the back of the throat and comes up with the phlegm. It can also come from bleeding gums or other sources in the mouth. Infrequently, it might arise from the stomach or lungs. If it persists, increases in frequency, duration or severity have it checked out.

Mgt: An inbox consultation to review would be helpful. You should consult with your PCP. For assessment for viral or bacterial infection, imaging and cultures. It may be due to a viral illness, but I think you should be seen.
Unusual: This can conceivably occur, but would very strongly recommend that you be seen by a doctor asap.
BRB in phlegm: Blood could come from anywhere along the respiratory tract from the nose down to the smallest airway. Depending upon your general health, the best option might be to monitor for recurrence. Discuss with your doc at next visit.
For past week I've had small streaks of blood in phlegm in the morning. Some blood stains when blow nose. Not sick with cold or flu. Cause?
Blood from nose: Blood from nose (epistaxis) can be due to the high heat in the midwest & most of the country right now. The heat can dry out mucous membranes causing bleeding and 'small streaks of blood phlegm' and 'when blowing nose.' you may want to see your doctor bleeding becomes excessive or persists. Topical vaseline or Bacitracin on the nasal septum may help protect the mucous membranes from drying.See 1 more doctor answer
My 2 month old spit up a small spot of blood in her phlegm after violently coughing it out. Is this cause for concern? I only saw it once..
Yes: Yes. Vigorous coughing can break small blood vessels and cause those symptoms. However, coughing up blood should always be evaluated by an MD.
What could be the cause of spitting brown phlegm in the morning? After a couple spits it's clear and doesn't do it again till morning. No blood when I blow my nose
Need diagnosis: Brown phlegm is probably not from the oral cavity or from the gums. Obviously, you need a proper diagnosis. Although you say there is no nasal bleeding, I would worry more about old blood coming from the esophagus or stomach. An ENT doctor or a gastroenterologist should be consulted.
My gp says I have laryngitis caused by a viral infection but since seeing him I seem to be coughing up more phlegm some with tinges of blood?
Inflammation: You likely have post viral laryngo-tracheobronchitis causing cough with phlegm usually clear but may be blood tinged. A chest x-ray mae be required if the symptoms persist. The usual therapy id steroids and narcotic cough suppression. If not improving a bronchoscopy may be needed. Also if smoking one should stop.See 1 more doctor answer

I have a cold with a cough and some sneezing today I coughed up a lil blood in some phlegm and a little dotted blood in nose. Cause for concern?
Blood in sputum: There is concern if > 1-2 teaspoons of blood as opposed to blood streaks, A cold irritates the bronchioles and the force of the cough can cause minor capillary bleeding. Similarly in the nose the congestion, sneeze force and ironically dryness cause capillary breakage and bleeding. Vasoline on the inside of nose at night, to moisturize. Try a cough supressant, may need antibiotic.Talk to doc
Hello doctors! Can sinusitis cause hemoptysis in throat? Why am I coughing up blood with phlegm only in morning?
Hemoptysis: I wouldn't blame blood you are coughing up in the morning on your sinuses. This maybe a very different problem and you should have your throat checked by your primary care MD.

Recent sinus infection caused blood in the nose and phlegm. Was prescribed doxycycline blood stopped but then reappeared. Do I need more meds?
Bloody nose: The blood is due to the erosion of small blood vessels in your nose because if the mucus. It may be dry in your house so using a humidifer or vaporizer can be helpful. Also purchase saline gel and moisturize your nostrils with the gel several times a day
For over a year it seems all the phlegm in my nose goes into my throat somehow and causes me to choke. I also always wake up with blood in my mouth.?
Probably not your nose: Your symptoms do not sound like they have anything to do with your nose. The nose makes anywhere from 250 ml to 2000 ml of mucus a day and this mucous rarely causes choking. When people feel mucus in their throat and they choke it is almost always due to unrecognized reflux. Stomach juice comes up from below gets into your throat causing choking and irritation. You need to see an ENT doctor for an evaluation.See 1 more doctor answer
