What are the causes of a positive ANA test result?

What are the causes of a positive ANA test result?

Many: ANA can be positive in many diseases and in many apparently healthy people. By itself, it does not mean much other than pointing to a higher but not certain risk for an individual to develop an autoimmune disease.

Ana (Definition)

An "ana" is a blood test used to screen a person for the possibility of several autoimmune diseases. It is important to remember that this is a screening test and a positive result only indicates more testing may be warranted. No blood test is perfect, and getting to a diagnosis is usually much more complex than drawing blood and looking at a number ...Read more

What can cause false positives on a ANA test im just concerned and don't want a false positive?

See below: They can occur for a variety reasons such as having a current or chronic infection. However; anas can have positive results and these can occur due to the type of the assay that was performed and can vary from different laboratories. It is is up to your rheumatologist to determine whether or not it is a false positive.

Would a negative ANA rule out lymphoma? Does lymphoma cause a positive ANA test result?

It does not: At your age, if you have lymphoma it's probably Hodgkin's. ANA really has nothing to do with malignant lymphoma. If you're worried about big lymph nodest, trust me -- lymphoma nodes are obviously very abnormal. Best wishes, and I hope you'll always stay actively involved with your health.

Tomorrow, I have to do another ANA test, will me taking plaquinil cause a false positive ana?

No: Wondering why you are taking a medication often prescribed for lupus if you don't list either lupus or another reason for the medicine. Anti-nuclear antibody tests aren't reported as "positive" or "negative" but as a titer. They remain an important screening test for lupus.

What would cause platelet count in sept 797 and new count in march of 324? Ana positive test

What would cause platelet count in sept 797 and new count in march of 324? Ana positive test

Platelets: Platelets tend to be an acute phase reactant that can become very elevated during an acute infection or an acute flare of the lupus. When the inflammatory process is under better control, the platelets will return to a normal level. This is very common.

If you have fibromoalga would that cause weak positive ANA test or MS nothing elsa comes up on tests but have ache joints on amtriptaline for pain?

Comments: Fibromyalgia does not affect ANA, and many normals have low titer tests. Perplexed why you are using amitryptyline, as no good evidence of value in fibromyalgia. Better drugs include gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, Savella (milnacipran). Does not sound like you have MS.

Positive ANA and high creatine in blood tests. Chest pain and flutter and skin rash on chest. Are these related? What could cause these?

Positive ANA and high creatine in blood tests. Chest pain and flutter and skin rash on chest. Are these related? What could cause these?

Could be LUPUS,,: These signs could all point to sle or systemic lupus erythematosus. Your creatinine can mean renal involvement, and the rash, although sle has the malar or "butterfly" rash on the face, not the chest, and heart involvement is inflammation, like carditis, more than rhythm changes, but no two cases are alike. This is seen more in women. It can also be lyme disease. See your dr. For more tests.

Not rheumatologic: Sounds like you do not meet the criteria for rheumatologic disease. Low titer positive ANA is very common in the general population. Reynauds is also common in the general population.

A positive ANA test, vitamin d deficient, anemia, body aches, and high sed rate. Could all of these symptoms be caused from celiac?

A positive ANA test, vitamin d deficient, anemia, body aches, and high sed rate. Could all of these symptoms be caused from celiac?

No: Celiac disease can cause vitamin d deficiency and anemia, but it's not associated with a positive ANA test. Most patients with celiac have a normal sed rate. Vitamin d deficiency is often associated with myalgia. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease, and having one autoimmune disease increases your chances of having another one, such as lupus, which can explain your posiitve ANA and body aches.

What causes a positive ana?

What causes a positive ana?

Autoimmune disease: ANA (anti-nuclear antibody) is a blood test used by doctors that indicates the presence of an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system is predisposed to recognize normal things in your body as foreign invaders that need to be attacked. The results are not specific for any particular disease if positive, but are a preliminary test, after which a range of possibilities are considered.

Possibly normal: Up to 5% of healthy people may have a low titer ana. Lupus and other autoimmune diseases and sarcoidosis are possiblities. Diagnosis is on the basis of associated findings, not the ANA by itself.

What does a positive ANA test mean?

What does a positive ANA test mean?

Antibodies vs nuclei: The titer (how much antibody power is present) is important -- 1:40 seldom means much, 1:320 would worry most folks -- as does the pattern, but like all lab tests, its meaning comes from the setting. Typically a screen for lupus and related diseases, many older folks who are healthy run a low titer.
