When a child always lies on his left side to sleep, can it make his rib development assymetric?

Possibly: This is potentially more likely in an infant that cannot roll over at all. In older children sleeping on one side should not make ribs develop asymmetrically as the child is up and moving all day. We are all asymmetric ...I have had success with chiropractic adjustments, massage, and craniosacral therapy resolving such asymmetry as these release fascia and muscles that can misalign the bones. ...Read more

9yr old thin m. One rib seems to poke out more than the other. Is definitely bone, not tissue. Child does Judo. No pain. Should we be worried?

Address next visit: It is not unusual for a thin child to have some mild asymmetry and to see a little difference on one side compared to the other. I would have his pediatrician take a look at it. Also he should have a good exam for scoliosis, early scoliosis can sometimes cause an asymmetrical appearance of the rib cage as well. Your doc will let you know if any xrays are necessary! ...Read more

Cartilage is a little bit movable but may be more movable during pregnancy. Perhaps the cartilage and/or the junction of where it attaches to bone is inflamed (called costochondritis) and either moved a bit or just swelled up from the inflammation.
