Is there anything I can give my 9 month old for a cough?

Is there anything I can give my 9 month old for a cough?

No drugs!: Please do not give any medications to your 9 month old. While it has been common practice in the past, and physicians often recommended drugs for cough and cold, recent studies have shown they do not help and may in fact cause harm. No child under 2 years old should take any cough/cold meds, including over the counter. Keep child hydrated, humidify air, and if it persists get evaluated for cause.

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

See below: No decongestant or antihistamine is safe for infants. Humidification, steam from running the shower and hydration might get you through the night. If severe take her to pediatric er. If stable go to pediatrician tomorrow.

Is it unsafe to for a 9 month old to have a Vicks vaporizer with the vaposteam in the water? My baby has a cough and congestion that keeps her awake.

I never use it: I find any scented material is more of an air pollutant in small kids than helpful. There airways are different than adults and often become more congested and or drain more when fragrances are used. I basically never recommend it. I can remember the stinky stuff my mom used when I was young, and still hate the smell.

What drug to use for 9 month old with cough and cold?

What drug to use for 9 month old with cough and cold?

Avoid Cold medicines: Cough in young children is extremely frustrating for parents. Unfortunately cough medications used in adults don't work in children. Decongestants in combination with cough medications can actually be harmful. Using guafenesin may be helpful to help secretions stay loose. Increasing fluid intake and humidity in the air can definitely help. Honey (for kids over 12 months) may be a natural remedy.

When my 9 month old baby cries he will begin to cough, is this normal? Sometimes it seems like it takes his breath away.

When my 9 month old baby cries he will begin to cough, is this normal? Sometimes it seems like it takes his breath away.

Some babies or: children have very sensitive cough and gag reflexes and may be triggered by very benign things like crying. As long as there is no wheezing, difficulty breathing or color change, this doesn't sound like anything too concerning in and of itself. However, if it persists, you may want to discuss this with your child's pediatrician.

Cough remedy: Suck out the mucus in his nose with a bulb syringe, use saline nose drops 4 times daily, take him into the washroom, turn on the hot shower and let him breath in the hot steam. Elevate his matress with a wedge and keep the vaporizer on where he sleeps. If the cough does not improve in several days check him over by his pediatrician push fluids, reduce milk.

My 9 month old baby keeps coughing at night for the past few days and seems to have no cough during the day why is it only when he's in deep sleep?

My 9 month old baby keeps coughing at night for the past few days and seems to have no cough during the day why is it only when he's in deep sleep?

Baby's night cough: Coughing with a cold is often worse when lying down and during sleep because the muscles and tissues of the upper airway become relaxed, mucus drips down our nose and throat, and we don't clear our airway of secretions as well during sleep. However infants with worsening cough or difficulty breathing must be evaluated for more serious conditions, such as pertussis, bronchiolitis, or pneumonia.

RSV, influenza: Many of the winter viruses are still circulating around and could be the cause of his ongoing cough. Have him rechecked to make sure he is not wheezing, developed or worsened pneumonia or other causes of chronic cough. Make sure to get flu vaccine every year!

Needs to be seen NOW: Babies the age of your daughter do not have a lot of reserve when it comes to illnesses. As a result, their condition can deteriorate quickly when ill. From what you are describing, she needs to be seen by a doctor as soon as possible.

Not used in Kids: Here in the US the drug is not used in kids. It is a long acting product that has not met the safety guidelines of our Food and Drug administration for infant/toddler/early school age. Shorter acting albuterol is often used in such situations.

My 9 month old son has a cold. He had a fever at first and now the past few days has a horrible runny nose and cough. Should I take him to the doctors?

My 9 month old son has a cold. He had a fever at first and now the past few days has a horrible runny nose and cough. Should I take him to the doctors?

Not Necessarily: Fever is your body's attempt to defend itself against an immune system attack. As long as your child is eating, making urine, looking well and carrying on his normal functions do not worry. On the other hand, if he is lethargic, vomiting, not eating this is the time to bring him to the er see less.

If.....: If in pain, very lethargic, dehydrated yes. If the fever is gone, sleeping well and acting close to normal, waiting a few days should be ok.
