What can I do to start regaining muscle right after my cast is removed?

Therapy: Ask your doctor how much you are allowed to do immediately after a cast is removed - bone may still be healing. Start with range of motion/stretching exercises. As you start regaining your normal motion, you then can start specific strengthening. As you use your limb more, the muscle strength/bulk will return over time. ...Read more

Muscle (Definition)

It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. How long do I need to be in an arm sling and when can I remove it. Into my 4th week since fracturing my clavicle.

Followup: I would go by your doctors directions, but in general slings are for comfort only with clavicle fractures, they do not really make them heal any faster. For most clavicle fractures, I let my patients come out as soon as they are comfortable enough to do so. ...Read more

Gastroc strain?: If u have strained ( partially torn) the medial( inside) head of your gastrocnemius muscle( most common injury that your symptoms suggest)rest for 4-6 wks(or u risk re-injury),heel lift can help. Exam and MRI will confirm diagnosis.Unfortunately there is no substitute for rest in this case and other muscle strain injuries( i.e.hamstring). Best of Luck! ...Read more

Yes: These are symptoms that can be transient and benign, but also could be helpful in the greater context of your medical health (possible medication side effects, potentially important within the context of other symptoms, etc). Never hesitate to let your doctor know about any concerns/observations you have. Their job is to determine significance. ...Read more

In january it will be 8months until I have done my ACL surgery. Does my muscle need to be exactly like my other leg so i can resume playing soccer?

Not Exactly: There is only one doc to answer that question and that is the orthopedic surgeon. He knows exactly what he did and how long you should delay playing soccer. In general the muscles do not need to be the exact strength in both legs to play. Usually one starts playing gently if possible and gradually get more active over time. Just check with your surgeon please! recovering slowly to normal. ...Read more

See illustration: After a continent ileal pouch, which allows the rectal muscles to be spared, but instead of a large intestine to store stool, a pouch is created with the small intestine. The connection to the rectum must be protected by a diverting ileostomy, usually a loop ileostomy. The : The elbow, as you know from your experience, is a very complex joint(s) and in some ways behaves differently and is more complex than other joints. I.E risk of heterotopic bone formation (ho) you have options but need to be evaluated very carefully and with someone with extensive experience with elbows. One option for example is removal of the implant without replacement. As with any option this has both advantages and disadvantages i.E main one being the radius can migrate proximally. You and your doctor will have to weigh risks of leaving things as is versus risks of complications going in again i.E ho, radial nerve injury etc.. ...Read more

How long is the recovery period after an arm lift? I was successfully able to lose about 70 pounds, but the excess skin on my upper arms will not go away. I want to have an arm lift procedure done to eliminate this extra skin, but I am concerned about how

Congratulations : Congratulations on your success with weight loss! you are undoubtedly experiencing the many of the wonderful benefits of your new body. After successful weight loss, the upper arm area commonly appears very loose and lax as a result of the inability of the upper arm skin to "snap back" after the volume of fat in the arms is reduced. Arm lift surgery, or brachioplasty, is a very effective means of removing the loose skin and tissue from the arms and chest wall and creating a tighter and more toned appearance. To remove the excess skin, a long incision is made, extending from the elbow up the back of the arm to the armpit and beyond along the upper chest wall. I always mention to my patients that this is a long scar that will always be visible in a short sleeved shirt or tank top, and i emphasize the importance of weighing the benefits of the arm lift against the fact that there will always be a visible scar at that sight. After arm lift surgery, you will likely have surgical drains in place in each arm to remove the natural tissue fluid that accumulates after surgery. These drains are usually removed within a week, if used at all. You will need to wear a compression garment at all times except when showering for the first 3 weeks after surgery, and then wear the garment for another 3 weeks for at least half of the day. The garment usually consists of snugly fitting, flesh colored sleeves that fasten in the back, and are easily hidden under clothing. These compression sleeves help reduce swelling and fluid accumulation, and may improve the final shape of the arms and the appearance of the scars. Lifting, pushing, and pulling should be very light for 6 weeks after surgery. I typically recommend about 7-10 days off of work for a desk job, but a longer time off may be required if your job is very physical and requires heavy lifting. Your board certified plastic surgeon can discuss your options with you and help you decide whether you'd benefit from this excellent procedure. All the best, dr. Skourtis. ...Read more

Arm Lift Recovery...: typically involves 2 weeks off from work, during which you should elevate the arms and avoid movement of the arms. Week 3 - 4 you will have limited range of arm motion, but by the end of week 6 you should be able to resume normal activities. Precise recovery details will depend on the type of lift you have. I severely twisted my ankle. It was misplaced and put back manually. How long does it take usually to get back to normal and how sensitive is it afterwards? What should I do to strengthen it?

Up to a year: Unfortunately a ligament injury can take longer to heal than a fracture. Even after the pain is gone there can still be swelling and popping which means it's still healing. Try to combine ankle strengthening with contrast baths, but if symptoms persist after 3 months you should have it re-evaluated to make sure the joint cartilage was not injured. That may require an MRI to determine. ...Read more
