Pincered t-spine in 1988. Incessant buckling led to paraspinal swelling (cumulative trauma disorder). Did not show in 1.5-t mri. What about 3.0-t?

Probably not: Hi bruce - not sure but 3t isn't really that much better then 1.5t - there are other variable that are more important. A good quality 1.5t scan is definitely sufficient. Best regards - dr. G from metismd.Com. ...Read more

I have a lipoma in my back rib area with swelling around that causing pain there, abdomen and side ct, x-ray, and MRI show nothing what can this be?

Between muscles?: Lipomas can arise almost anywhere. If there is a mass you feel and the studies don't clearly show it, it may arise in the muscle or between the muscles. Pain results from stretched muscles especially when you use the one involved. Speak to a general surgeon. ...Read more

Recent MRI of cervical spine shows spinal cord swelling at c5- C6 , had acdf sugery in sept. Why is there still swellinh?

Hard to say: There are multiple potential causes. It still might be residual from what you had before surgery, there may be continued compression, or have been a surgical complication. Your surgeon would be the best to interpret the meaning of the study based upon your individual case. Thank you for your question. ...Read more

Rot cuff surg jan back to work june pain returns 3 weeks later. Mri says repair healed well but lots of swelling and inflam. Cort shot no help. Why?

Tendinosis: Tendinosis is a disease of the tendon which is not considered inflamed. Therefore cortisone would not be effective as it is an anti-inflammatory. Choices include further strengthening exercises to remodel the tendon. Currently seeing the use of regenerative injection therapy such as platelet rich palsma. Is there a muscle injury that might cause swelling in lower part of the leg but nothing shows abnormal on MRI? Does MRI always show edema w/ injury?

Is there a muscle injury that might cause swelling in lower part of the leg but nothing shows abnormal on MRI? Does MRI always show edema w/ injury?

MRI can tell: as long as the correct "sequences" were performed and the right area was imaged. For instance, a knee MR only includes a small area of the leg. Your pain could be below or above that. One type of sequence looks specifically for fluid in the muscle, and it is very sensitive for muscle strains. If you have your MRI on a CD, I can review it at HealthTap Concierge: healthtap.com/saurbornmd. ...Read more

Peroneal nerve?: The common peroneal nerve is susceptible to injury at the level of the knee as it circles the fibula. Findings can be subtle or absent on MRI (especially early) and xray won't see it. Ask your doctor if your symptoms and signs suggest peroneal nerve injury. Ultrasound can be used to see if the nerve is swollen by comparing the symptomatic side with the opposite side. ...Read more

3 months IV treatment for osteomyelitis following acdf, new MRI shows same swelling, does this mean infection is still in the bones?

Not necessarily: An MRI is a very sensitive test and even in a well treated infection responding well to antibiotics, marrow changes can be seen for even 6 months. Because of this, blood markers such as CRP is the more common way to follow infection response in the spine. If any question, an infectious disease specialist can be helpful. ...Read more
