MRI can tell: as long as the correct "sequences" were performed and the right area was imaged. For instance, a knee MR only includes a small area of the leg. Your pain could be below or above that. One type of sequence looks specifically for fluid in the muscle, and it is very sensitive for muscle strains. Any problem from infection, fractures, dislocation or cancer inflammation, abscess all will show up in a MRI scan it is expensive but extremely useful test especially if we are not sure of what is the cause of your pain.
