Interesting question: Typically one conceives around ovulation which occurs mid-cycle, usually around days 14-16 if you have a normal cycle of 28-30 days. Then about 14-16 days later one would expect their period. If your period is more than a week late after this and you had been having unprotected sex around ovulation, then checking a pregnancy test would be warranted at that time.
