This is subclassified as primary (essential) vs. Secondary: the former is due to unexplained production of platelets, the latter is most often due to chronic infections or inflammation (crohn's dz), anemia, cancer, a rxn to a medication, or following the surgical removal of the spleen. Could periodontitis cause high white blood cell count, elevated platelet count, and low neutrophils. Any causes besides cancer can cause this.
Lots of things: A low WBC can be from neutritional deficiency, autoimmune diseases, hormone disorders, bone marrow failure states (aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome) and leukemias. It can also be seen in someone who otherwise seems healthy, and may even have a normal bone marrow on biopsy (benign neutropenia). Viral infections can cause low WBC counts too. ...Read more
Numerous Causes: Platelets are a blood component necessary for hemostasis (cessation of bleeding); are produced in bone marrow; activated by blood vessel damage. There are numerous causes for a low platelet count: impaired production (bone marrow, genetic disorders); increased consumption (infections), increased destruction (autoimmune diseases), & more. Evaluation by your doctor is necessary to determine the cause ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Thrombocytopenia: Low platelets (thrombocytopenia) can be caused by many conditions, both benign and malignant. Some people are born with it. Other times it's due to a lab error known as "platelet clumping". Many medications can cause it. There are also a host of serious hematological problems which cause low platelets, such as itp and leukemia. It's very important that low platelets be evaluated by a hematologist. ...Read more
See your doctor: There are many causes of low platelet and white cell counts. Many times the cause is medication effects or infection. However, there are many more serious causes such as leukemia and myelodysplasia. A thorough evaluation by your physician is a must because of the possibility of a serious condition. ...Read more
DDx: There are many potential causes of low platelet count (thrombocytopenia). In general platelet production can be low from various bone marrow disorders including cancer and other problems. If the bone marrow is producing platelets they can be destroyed in the body such as immune thrombocytopenic purpura (itp) or sequestered in the spleen if the spleen is enlarged (eg alcohol related splenomegaly). ...Read more
Neutropenia: A low neutrophil count (neutropenia) can be caused by many different things. Some people have low white cells due to a medication they are taking. Others are born with it. However, too many platelets can have other causes as well, so it's best to ask your own doc about this. ...Read more
Underlying cause ?: These are each signs of disease - need to find underlying cause to fix. High platelets and high WBC come from any kind of inflammation (infection, autoimmune, injury, etc), high potassium can be cellular damage or kidneys not working well. Anemia can be from internal or external bleeding, blood cells being destroyed, or inability to create enough new rbcs (nutritional or bone marrow problem). ...Read more
Thrombocytosis: The most common cause of an elevated platelet count is iron deficiency anemia. Some people are born with thrombocytosis. Other causes include chronic infection or inflammation, metastatic cancer, and essential thrombocythemia, a bone marrow disorder which causes excessive production of platelets. For the correct diagnosis, you will need to see a hematologist. ...Read more
