One of the most common causes of excessive saliva in otherwise normal people is that of reflux. If you have any symptoms of reflux you can try to take some over the counter medicine like Prevacid or Nexium (esomeprazole) for a week or two to see if it helps.
Do you have bad teeth? That can do it.
Certain medicines can do it too.
Is it just when you sleep? Maybe sleep apnea.

There are no real dental problems associated with excessive saliva, but the opposite is true.
People with dry mouth may suffer from painful oral tissues, rampant decay, halitosis and other issues.
If medications are used to slow salivary flow, I would be concerned about those side effects possibly developing.

It probably will go back to normal, but there are some conditions that should have medical attention. Dentures, gerd, mouth infection, pregnancy or stomatitis can cause this. Also some rarer ones.
