Why do you feel so cold when your body temp is high from a fever---seems opposite?

Why do you feel so cold when your body temp is high from a fever---seems opposite?

Evaporation: When your body temperature is high, it tries to cool itself by opening capillaries near the surface of the skin. This brings the "warm" blood to the surface and increases evaporation. Evaporation causes the sensation of cooling. As an example, poor a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the back of your hand; as it evaporates, you will note a sense of cooling to that area. ...Read more

If my normal body temp is 96.9 average, would upper 98 degrees be considered a (low) fever temperature?

If my normal body temp is 96.9 average, would upper 98 degrees be considered a (low) fever temperature?

No: Doctors prefer to look at signs and symptoms instead of a number from a thermometer. We don't worry about a temperature in the 98 degree range in a normal person. ...Read more

For how long does body temp need to be elevated to be considered a fever? What's the lowest temp considered to be a fever?

Oral, rectal or axil: 38 C or 100.4 F is usually the cutoff for "fever"
Oral is the most common, but rectal temps are the most accurate. Just one measurement of 38 or higher, or 100.4 or higher is considered a fever. ...Read more

I have had a low grade (99.4 - 100.4) fever for over 2 weeks. My body temp has always been 98.6 exactly. What should I do?

I have had a low grade (99.4 - 100.4) fever for over 2 weeks. My body temp has always been 98.6 exactly. What should I do?

See a doctor: Your temperature will vary from below 98.6 up to 100 degrees in the course of a day normally. Unless you are having temps in excess of 100 f or having symptoms beyond the sensation of warmth (chills, sweats, cough, nausea and vomiting, pains, etc.) would doubt anything serious. On the other hand, if you actually are having true fevers a good history and exam by a doctor is a good idea. ...Read more

I had a temp of 101 on 2 days ago. Since then my temp won't go below 99.5. My normal body temp is 96-97.6 ish. Is this a fever still?

I had a temp of 101 on 2 days ago. Since then my temp won't go below 99.5. My normal body temp is 96-97.6 ish. Is this a fever still?

Fever: The strict definition is a body temperature which either reaches 100 f or fails to get as low as 98.6 f in a 24 hour period. Strictly, you sound as if you have fever, but not sure what this means because you do not describe any other symptoms. Hope you are better soon. ...Read more

My children had fever for 24 hrs and then down to low body temp. This has been happening for 5 days. Temps go between 95.9-97.8 what could cause this?

Fever: Your child may be fighting off a virus or other mild infection. If the fever is over 101, your child is contagious until it stays below 101 for 24 hours. 98.6 is an average body temperature (which means that there is a range of normal temps). If he is acting fine, you can usually just observe and see if he has any other symptoms. A virus will usually run its course in 7-10 days. ...Read more

Is it true that normal body temp can go up to 99.6 throw out the day with out it being. Considers a fever?

Is it true that normal body temp can go up to 99.6 throw out the day with out it being. Considers a fever?

True: True. There is no single number that represents ideal temp for all people. It depends on where its measured, time of day, activity level, etc. In normal healthy folks your temperature fluctuates over the course of a day. Lower in morning, higher in afternoon and evening. 99.6 is not a fever ...Read more

If your usual body temp runs at about 97.6 F, is a temperature of 98.6 F actually a fever for you (elevated temp)?

If your usual body temp runs at about 97.6 F, is a temperature of 98.6 F actually a fever for you (elevated temp)?

Feeling feverish?: Everyone is unique -from the nose we have to the body temp we keep. 98.6 deg F doesn't apply to everyone as a 'normal temp' & in your case u seem to run at 97.6? - Note that the body temp goes up & down throughout the day (circadian rhythm). I think u would KNOW IT if u had a fever -there should be a subjective feeling of that. I wouldn't trust a 'number' from a thermometer, it needs to correlate ...Read more

My body temp ranges from 96.7 to 99.2 depending on the time of month. I'm about to menstruate, and it's high (99.1). Is this normal or fever?

Normal: Normal temperature varies from 97.6 to 99.2 degrees f. During the day. It's lowest in the morning and highest in late afternoon to early evening. Any temperature above 99.4f would be considered a fever. A temperature over 100.2f would be considered a significant fever. ...Read more

Wide range: There is a wide range of 'normal' temperatures for an adult - from 95 through 100 can be normal. Above 101 is what I would consider a fever that would be related to infection. ...Read more

My 3 year old boy body feels steamingly hot yet his temp 37.3 no fever?

My 3 year old boy body feels steamingly hot yet his temp 37.3 no fever?

Warm, but no fever: Its common for a child to feel warm but when you take their temperature, they don't have a fever. Certain areas of the body have increased blood flow which can make them feel warmer. Also, if the ambient temperature is cool or your hands are cold, the child's skin will subjectively feel warmer. There's always a chance the thermometer is faulty, so you can try taking the temp with another one! ...Read more

Fever reducers don't work on my body what is it keep getting hot after I hit my head kinda worrying. Maybe body can't regulate temp? Wasn't knockedout

Temperature settings: Everyone is unique -- from the nose we have to the body temp we keep. When you say 'fever' what exactly do you mean? 98.6 deg F doesn't apply to everyone as a 'normal temp' AND the body temp goes up and down throughout the day (circadian rhythm). I'm recovering from a flu, and I exercised in the hot sun this morning around 8am - 1pm. Up till night, my body temp. Is hot but I've no fever. Why?

Skin vs Core: Your skin temp may be increased due to shunting if blood from your core to your skin. It's the body's way of regulating temp. Skin is like a radiator. It's hot to dissipate the heat your body doesn't want. Your temp is normal because it's working. ...Read more

I feel feverish, but no fever. My temp was 98.8 -99 (oral) possible? My body is warm except my palms and feet?

Doctor can evaluate: Such symptoms are not specific for any one problem, so a doctor (primary care) should evaluate if the symptoms don't go away quickly, or if they happen again or increase in severity. Sometimes, mild viral infections can cause people's "non-specific" symptoms. Other times, there is actually something else going on inside the body (lab tests may be needed). ...Read more
