If it is being done with intravenous contrast, then there is a risk of allergic reaction to the iodine, as well as some risk of kidney damage in those with underlying kidney risk factors (eg elderly, diabetes). ...Read more

Doctors, what are the risks of a CT scan on a teenager ?

Doctors, what are the risks of a CT scan on a teenager ?

Risk vs Benefit: The main risk is that a small amount of radiation is used during the procedure which can slightly increase the risk of developing cancer in the future. The real question is why is the CT being ordered? If the benefit of diagnosing a problem with CT is greater than the miniscule risk of developing cancer in the future, get the CT. Remember there is also a risk of missing a disease without the CT ...Read more

What are the risks of getting a CT scan with regards to radiation and all that?

What are the risks of getting a CT scan with regards to radiation and all that?

Minimal: A cat scan is a fairly safe procedure. A single exam to a part of a body does not have significant risk as far as radiation exposure. An exam using IV contrast has a slight risk for contrast reaction. Serious reactions are quite rare. If you have a significant allergic history(significant allergic response to multiple things) your risk is slightly greater. ...Read more

Cancer risk is 1 in 500 in children. Also using iodinated contrast might cause transient renal failure in about 5% of patients.
