If the vertigo is not associated with any hearing loss, this is usually from vestibular neuronitis ( inflammation around the balance nerves near the brainstem). Normally, when the brain receives simultaneous and equal input from our balance organs (semicircular canals), the two signals cancel out and we don't perceive imbalance. When one of the inputs from one ear is firing at a different rate or intensity the the brain interprets the difference as asymmetry and we experience vertigo. As a result the blood vessels do not contract as rapidly and if you stand quickly they will not be able to respond and push blood against gravity.
